Following on from my previous post about trying to use the Deecall Plus VOIP service on my ToT line in Phuket:

We could not get the VOIP interface box to work. The Deecall guys accessed my Billion ToT router remotely, but couldn't see any problems. However, when we tried a different test router provided by Deecall, the VOIP worked ok!!

So, I tried to upgrade the Billion router firmware, but the existing firmware 'refused' to upgrade. This makes me think that these routers supplied by ToT have a formware version especially for toT, and which denies VOIP use.

No problem - I'll change the router. So I went and bought a D-Link DSL-2640T ADSL2+ router, with 4 LAN ports and wifi. I plug it all in and run the config wizard via the web interface. reboot and . . . it doesn't connect to the ToT ISP...

I've checked my username/password settings, VCI/VPI settings, also authentication, encapsulation etc etc and all the settings appear as per my Billion router. But the b*gger will not connect..

The ADSL link is coming up but it is 'failing to connect'. The username/password is correct and I've swapped back to my old router just now and can connect fine...

I also upgraded to the latest firmware on this D-link, but the lack of connection is still there..

Any advice before I put it in the dustbin??

I had a similar problem, it all depends on what DSLAM you are connected to. I'm close to Ao Makam and D-link will not connect nor would zyzel or several other brands. I ended up with a Edimax 4 port / wireless router. Actually its been pretty good.

The problem is a compatibility issue with TOTs infrastructure and their equipment for certain area/dslams. Those HASE270 modems are a piece of junk and are what TOT started out with and from what I understand there exchange equipment is the same. Made in Korea rubbish. They bought a whole load of crap for cheap, hence their stockpile of HASE270 modems.

But just to further clarify, with the various brands of router/modem I tried, all the settings were fine, they simply wouldn't sync.

i got TOT service last week and im using BILLION 5210s adsl router. Initially the speed sucks for my VOIP and Bittorrent. I reflashed the firmware (the firmware which TOT supplied is higher than the manufacturer) to the lower version supplied by the manufacturer and the speed was excellent.

I am pleased with TOT service so far although they tend to disconnect and reconnect every few hours as i notice the ip address keeps changing every few hours.

Try to reflash the firmware and im sure it will help. TOT have no ways to "LOCK" you from reflashing the firmware.

Pomthai, your explanation sounds reasonable. Everything else looks ok but this D-link will not sync up. I'm on a new copper cable that runs between our airport hotel and the airport control tower, about 3km away, (please do not ask how I managed to get a phone-line in that configuration. Suffice to say, it's a dedicated bit of copper. Wher it goes after the control tower I do not know - presumably to the ToT office down the road...) In any case, when I'm bored I can chat with the air-traffic-controllers.....

Also, you could check line quality if it does sync up momentarily. You want SNR margin as high as possible and line attenuation as low as possible.

SNR = Signal to noise ratio

Line Attenuation = Is a measurement of how far you are from the DSLAM (cable length)

Simon, what is the make / model of the router that works ?

Why don't you use the same model / make since its proven to work rather than "experiment" with others ?

The router that works does not have wifi.... I could always see if the manufacturer offers an ethernet + wifi model.

Simon

As far as the SNR and line attenuation are concerned:

SNR Margin = 40dB downstream and 30dB upstream

Line attenuation = 21dB downstream and 7dB upstream

Data rate = 512 downstream and 256 upstream

Those values are excellent, indicating that the loop between the DSLAM and your modem is working fine.

One thing I haven't read yet: have you been trying PPPoA or PPPoE configurations?

TOT uses (among other types) Alcatel Fox DSLAMs, which are only capable of handling PPPoE connections. Check the type of ppp connection your device tries to make.

I bought a nice quality D Link.. After fighting it for days TOT admitted the DLink ADSL modems dont work on 'thier' ADSL..

They did give me a free speedtouch after that (so much better than the zydus piece of shit) and I gave the modem to a mate on TT&T..

Ya ... like I said, best bet is to get the same make model and if u need Wi-Fi .. you could easily add an Wi-Fi access point (stand-alone) to the Ethernet ports or as you said find the same model / make but with Wi-Fi.

What make it is ?

Got these settings of the web :

VPI : 1

VCI : 32

Encapsulation : PPPoE LLC

I've been told the same as LivinLOS the tech even demonstrated. D-link wouldn't sync. I got a Edimax wifi modem 4 port router combi unit from the TOT tech guy for about 2.5K. The sell them in power buy central. It has worked a treat for the last ten months and doesn't need to be reset more than once a fortnight (usually). Since TOT's speed up it showing a data rate of 2048 D/L 864 U/L. I get on average 2/3 to 3/4 of those speeds.

Have you paid additional for this or just gold cyber ??

So I called Dlink.

This is what Dlink said ... TOT has too many different brands / kinds of DSLAM so compatibility could be an issue. Unlike True which uses a standard kind of DSLAM. So yes .. one could face a problem with Dlink on TOT.

Bad news for Simon.

BUT ..

1. Simon could return the Dlink to where he bought it from and get another router

2. Use the Dlink as a WiFi access point and attach it to the non-Wifi router that is proven to work.

No its standard goldcyber 1000 baht per month, I don't know why I get faster upload than I'm supposed to. When the speed for download was at 1mb (1024) I always had 512 Upload although I was supposed to have 256 up. Its always been that way here.

Here one of my better speed test results from the weekend.
