Hi TV gang,

I am an American, under 50,no Thai wife or WP living off savings.

My US issued 3x TR plus ext. is up in a few weeks (Oct.11) and

I was planning to go back to US to try for another 3x TR,(gives me 9 months yea?)but now

given the current uncertainties, and instability etc. I'm now wondering

if it might be more cost effective to get 1x TV from Penang or Vientianne

giving me a total of 90 dys(w/ext),which can then be repeated while I consider

whether Thailand will have me or maybe it's time to check out Phil,Cambodia

or Vietnam. The cost to fly back to US,including staying, while applying etc will

be about 2,500 USD. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Cheers

it's really up to you...a decision on cost and if you want to go stateside for a little while. penang is a $200-$300 trip and going to the states is like $2000-$3000. kinda an easy choice seems to me. sometimes (don't know about currently) you can also swing a multi-entry T-visa out of penang. even if you can't, it's still just a few hundred dollars every 3 months for single entry penang T-visas.

Same as you need to apply for visa originally...passport, a couple photos, and some malaysian ringits (from local ATM). no need to go to counselate...plenty of visa brokers on chulalia street. they do it all for about $5 fee plus counselates standard visa fees. it's about RM 125 or so all in. they will advise if counselate is currently giving out multi-entry t-visas.

still much cheaper to run to penang every 3 months...1 trip back to usa ($2000-3000) = about 2-3 years worth of visa runs. as long as they allow it, it makes sense for some to use this route to extend their stay in los.

that's an expensive airline... I did it for less than a $1000 R/T

That's with the BUDGET airline CHINA AIR..you have to add accommodations in USA,transportation(no car)

and fees for application through consulate etc. Last year I did it..China Air...stayed at a budget motel... transpo etc

and was back in LOS in almost exactly one month.Cost was between 2,500 and 3,000 USD. PLUS the flight

was hel_l.
