Culture Minister proposes crackdown on pornography

BANGKOK: – Culture Minister Anurak Chureemas today promised a concerted government effort to stamp out pornography, with one of the nation’s deputy prime ministers taking direct responsibility for the crackdown.

Mr. Anurak said that he would propose that a deputy prime minister acted as the driver to eliminate pornographic materials and their distribution points. This would particularly relate to materials involving violence, rape, incest, pornographic cartoons, the advertising of pornographic materials, and pornography involving children, with or without their consent.

Calling for all state agencies to work together on the clampdown, the culture minister said that the elimination of pornography required the combined efforts of the police and the ministries of the interior, education, information and communications technology, foreign affairs, culture and finance.

The Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Education would work together to study the issues involved and how to develop and amend legislation to address them, he added.

If pornography is already illegal in Thailand, does this mean that the powers-that-be need to somehow make pornography more illegal so the existing laws that already make pornography illegal can then be enforced? :o

No, they just need to make the penalties harsher, so that when they catch someone they're not back on the street the next day doing exactly the same thing. Same as many laws in Thailand regarding economic crimes: the fine is often no more than a few days' profits.

From the time I first started coming to Bkk. as a tourist in 1991, one of the annoyances that really got to me has been the open selling of very pornographic videos on the tables that are set up on Silom and Sukhumvit Rd. sidewalks, every evening. I cringe for Thailand when I see innocent families of tourists, out for a little shopping walk, exposed to pictures of extreme sex acts, displayed on the tables at the eye level of little children. Last time I looked, these porno vendors were still there. Civilized nations restrict the sales and viewing of pornography to adults, behind closed doors. They don't put it out on display for all to see, as they do here.

There is better things to do in Thailand than worry about porn peddlers.

I don't see a big deal to be honest and I've yet to see open selling of porn cds as you state- normally those sort they ask you if you want to buy. Then pull them out. Regardless you need to educate I suppose walking your children passed the numerous Beer Bars or Go Go's might offend some as well.
