Speech Therapy For Uk 8 Yr Old In Los ?

HI all ..

seems all my posts this week are odd ones, i assume as getting very near to the move now so its all the niggly things cropping up .

my 8 year (english) son is moving with me to thailand, albeit he is not following till our house construction is finished several months after i arrive .

He currently has speech therapy as his speech (reading and writing also) are far behind the norm .. l8st report rates his development as that of a 5 1/2 yr old on speech

so i need to find a real speech therapist where i can take him once he arrives . not a english speaking thai person who try's to teach katoys to speak like a female (thats all i can find in google for speech therapy in LOS !!)

preferably a english native speaking person .. who does this .. i'm not sure what it involves but am informed its a specialist therapy that i need to find a proffesional for ..

any help much appreciated .

i'm living near mabrachan lake , pattaya, but can travel as far as BKK if need be for this .

I remember a poster called "Ajarn" , who had suffered a stroke, asking about speech therapists. It may have been in the Chiang Mai section or the Medical section. Search for those responses and perhaps send a private message to "Ajarn".

xxxxxx completed relevant sections of a Phonology Screening Assessment and it was noted that he did not say words beginning with 'sk'. Instead, he said "starf' for 'scarf and 'sty" for 'sky'. 'Kr blends were also difficult e.g. trocodile for 'crocodile' and "twying" for 'crying'. xxxxxx did not say the sounds 'r' and 'th' (he said "w" and 'f' instead).

Renfrew Word Finding Vocabulary Test (RWFVT)

The RWFVT is a short screening test used to assess expressive vocabulary. xxxxx completed this and correctly identified 24 pictures, which gave him an age-equivalent of 4 years 2 months, demonstrating delay.

It was pleasing to see that xxxxx used strategies to try and help him to find the right word. For example, he described the pictures, their function or said a word closely related to the target word if he seemed unsure or unable to retrive the word. This' suggests a possibility of some word finding difficulties. For example, xxxxx said for 'helicopter, 'it's like an aeroplane, but it's not" and for'jewellery").that goes around your neck. Sometimes he prompted himself to the correct response.

On completion of another short screening test (RAPT), I again noticed that xxxxxx appeared to struggle to find the word he wanted at times. E.g. he said it has been tied to a...something."

xxxxx completed the RAPT. He looked at 10 pictures and. answered specific questions about them. The RAPT assesses the age levels of the information content and the grammatical usage in the answers given. xxxxxx scored 30.5 for information content, which gave him an age equivalent score of between 5 years 0 months and 5 years 11 months. His grammar score was 23, which gave him an age equivalent of 5 years 0-5 months. His scores are demonstrating some delay.

Summary and Recommendations

• xxxxx is not yet saying the blends 'sk' and `kr' in his speech

• xxxxx does not use the sounds 'r' and 'th'

• The completion of the RWFVT suggests possible word finding difficulties

• xxxxx's scores on the RAPT were delayed for both information content and use of grammar.

Honestly a case like this is way out any experience as I deal with mostly internal medicine.

So my thought process is biased. I can't help thinking that there my some organic pathology in the brain. However this is only speculation.

Has he been evaluated by a speech pathologist.

An EEG is a simple painless test that can be done in the office to check some aspects of brain function.

Possibly MRI. And possibly I'm way off base.

Are you planning any trips home?

That's probably your best bet for good health care for your son.

So my thought process is biased. I can't help thinking that there my some organic pathology in the brain. However this is only speculation.

Has he been evaluated by a speech pathologist.

An EEG is a simple painless test that can be done in the office to check some aspects of brain function.

Possibly MRI. And possibly I'm way off base.

Are you planning any trips home?

That's probably your best bet for good health care for your son.

it does make him sound worse than he is really imho ..

he's in a main stream school ..

my honest opinion on much of his speech is his 2 front teeth got knocked out when he was very small and 2nd set have not come thru comepletely so bit like a lisp on his talking ..

other than that he's (at risk of being flamed by the ladies on the board) a very typical child who has been mothered to much by my x-wife ..

so hates homework, does not pay attention in school and has to be told everything twice to get him to listen .. maybe mild ADHD even

school ed says its speech therapy he needs . on a regular basis

i think he might get by with just extra tuition and a good school dicipline .. english schools being as they are now they seem to just take the easy route and not work to much on the not so bright kids

Well, at first i thought that there might be a problem with his whole development. This could be a big problem in Thailand. If you have enough money, than you will be able to afford much better care in Thailand than in the UK, if you have limited funds, i would have suggested not to move here.

Can you afford a good private school here? If you can, then there are many available who also have special needs classes (they cost though!).

Here in Bangkok Vichayud Hospital has a very good child neurologist (i forgot his name though), he also works one or two days a week at Ramatibodhi Hospital for government rates. I would suggest a visit at this doctor, who can also refer him to a speech therapist, and suggest good schools.

And just one more thing, you posted that your son might have slight ADHD. Here in Thailand Ritalin is still regularly prescribed - my advice would be not under any circumstances to get him on that therapy (i have been on it).
