Policeman arrested for murder

A lieutenant at Bang Yikhan police station who allegedly shot dead his boss was arrested on Friday after being at large since the middle of October. Watcharin Rakpratum, a former investigator at Bang Yikhan station, was caught in the border area of northern Malaysia near Narathiwat. He was then transferred to Thai police at Tak Bai district before being flown to Bangkok yesterday. Police say that, on Oct 16, Watcharin shot his supervisor, Weerakorn Waiyawut, the Deputy Crime Suppression Chief, four times (in the torso, arm, leg and head) at the station after a heated argument. Watcharin ran away and Weerakorn was pronounced dead at Siriraj Hospital. Watcharin was sacked from the police force the following day. Assawin Khwanmueng, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner, said that after the shooting he ordered an investigation team to keep gathering information about Watcharin until they received a tip that the former investigator was in Malaysia. The Metropolitan Police Bureau then sought assistance from Malaysian police in arresting Watcharin. Malaysian authorities deported him to Thai soil yesterday before Thai police flew him to Bangkok, said Assawin.
