I just read the thread about the one cop killing the other over loss of face and I was actually a little relieved that I as a falang am not the only one that has to worry about being murdered in the event I embarass a Thai man. It comforst me a little to know I run the same risks as the locals.... don't know why that makes me feel better but it does! Call me crazy.

Anyway, I talked to my Japanese girlfriend about this subject and she recounted a great story that made me feel even better! 2 years ago the Japanese embassy issued an official warning to Japanese to NOT embarass Thai employees at all costs and that if they must criticise them or "get angry" then they should bring them alone to another room and do it privately. The reason was because of a recent event with a Japanese employer at a company getting angry at a Thai employees mistake in front of the whole office. The Thai employee later went to the bosses condo and waited outside for several hours for the boss to return. Now this is the part the freaks me right out! The SECURITY saw the suspicious individual hanging around out front (since he wasn't allowed inside) and called the police.. (shocker number one) then the police RESPONDED (shocker number two) and since they could not arrest the man for loitering they simply hid and watched him waiting for him to do something wrong. (shocker number three) When the boss came home the Thai employee attacked his boss with a knife and the security and police intervened and took him away with no one getting hurt.... WOW

Now just to be clear, this is an extremely expensive condo and the security were obviously top of the line and not the usual security found at a condo like mine. And the police are probably instructed to respond to this condos complaints because it is high profile but STILL. It makes me a little happy to know that in certain circumstances things get done right and lives are saved.

The security at my place would probably give him a seat and bring him a plate of food and a beer. Nice guys but I haven’t ever seen them secure anything! The "best" security guard I ever had was at a apartment block in Hong Kong. Every room had an alarm and if you accidentally set it off he would take about an hour and a half to get there, normally turning up in slippers. He was about 90 years old but come on, security?
