October 16, 200718 yr Would like to introduce a climbing plant with yellow flowers to the garden in Chiang Mai. A fast-growing plant would be nice. Any suggestions (for someone with little gardening knowledge) ? Also, suggestions on where to buy such a plant would be great.
October 16, 200718 yr The Yellow Mandevilla is a nice twining vine: (sorry can't remember the name in Thai) Solandra Maxima or chalice vine, called Toi tong in Thai. is a woody vining plant, more shrubby than the Mandevilla. Another plant whose flowers are not as showy but smells absolutely divine is the vining Ylang Ylang (Cananga) (Gra-dang nga jeen) --also a woody vine rather than climbing by tendrils:
October 16, 200718 yr The Yellow Mandevilla is a nice twining vine: (sorry can't remember the name in Thai) We've got a couple of these, quite nice and grow quickly. A boganvillia is also nice, but I'm not sure they're quick growing, if trained they can be climbers, beautiful when in flower.
October 16, 200718 yr Bougainvilleas have some serious thorns -- also a woody climbing plant. They require regular pruning to keep in shape .
October 16, 200718 yr Author Thanks for the suggestions so far. Something aromatic would be good, like the ylang ylang. I was thinking a yellow jasmine would be nice. Any idea if that should be available in Chiang Mai ? How to say it in Thai ?
October 17, 200718 yr You are probably thinking of Yellow Jessamine, also called yellow jasmine, it is not a real jasmine and I don't know that they have it here. Worth checking I guess Gelsemium sempervirens www.floridata.com/ref/G/gelsem.cfm DescriptionThe yellow Carolina jasmine (or "jessamine") is an attractive evergreen vine that tends to remain bushy and compact when grown in bright sun. When shaded though, it will climb up and over adjacent shrubs and trees to heights of more than 20 ft (6.1 m) in its quest for sunlight. The glossy rich green leaves are narrow oblongs with pointed tips and are 2-3 in (5.1-10.2 cm) long by 0.5 in (1.3 cm) wide. They are held in opposite pairs along smooth wiry reddish-brown stems. Small clusters of fragrant yellow tubular flowers are produced from late winter to early spring depending on location and temperature. The showy blossoms are about 2 in (5.1 cm) long and have a flared mouth 1 in (2.5 cm) in diameter. Carolina jasmine Carolina jasmine never fails to brighten gray late winter days.
