Gps Module, Where To Buy?

Featured Replies

I'm looking for either a bluetooth version to use with my PDA or failing that a standalone unit.

Anybody know where on KPG/Samui I might get one and roughly how much I will need to shell out for it?

Thanks in advance.

Never seen them retailed in Samui, the boat chandlers can get them but you are better off going to bangkok or phuket.

I've not checked BIG C tho.

I used to use these guys for GARMIN hand helds

please note that normal gps units (garmin) are double price then what they cost in the US. I bought a etrex for 100 USD a year ago while the thing here was sold for 9000 thb... Maybe ordering over internet is worth while...

Depends whether you want it loaded with Thai maps or not.

I bought 1 in the UK and then bought Thai maps and it still worked out cheaper than buying here.

Though the prices of the units have now reduced here to the point that is not such an attractive proposition.

Cheers

up to you but you will have to search yourself on internet where i can buy in bbk.

good luck

Are their any GPS systems that work here on Samui?... ie. have a map of Samui?...

Obviously GPS works here, but is their any systems that can direct you around Samui?...

Good questions.

I really don't see the need of a (car) GPS system on Samui. It would only work on the ring road and some roads in Chaweng, Lamai and Nathon and maybe Bophut area.

That's it...

GPS systems don't usually 'get' the dirt tracks and roads, not even in Europe.

I just drove some 4,500 kms through 9 European countries and paved roads are fine (although mistakes still happen) but dirt roads...forget it, even in EU.

How on earth would you like to type the addresses on Samui...? :o

I can't beleive how expensive these units are compared to the UK, almost twice the price!

I don't really care about the maps for it, I only need it to get positions for things for a project I'm working on. I just need something simple that says ok you are here!

If I need to use it for navigation when I'm on the mainland I'll just interface it to google maps on my smartphone.

Fair enough.

But if you're working on an important project a few thousand Baht wouldn't make the difference, would it ? :o

A few thousand baht always makes a difference, unless you happen to be loaded.

My Garmins have lots and lots of dirt tracks in the Thai countryside.

So many so that the shortest distance navigation calculation cab rarely be used.

Having said that Why would you need one on Samui?

Cheers

I bought a Bluetooth GPS unit (to use with a pda) WITH Thai maps for about 4000 baht, the maps are not perfect but the can get you from place to place (not street to street like in the uk). The software supplied is called powermap (the same as mapking basically) and has the maps for all over Thailand although I haven't tried it here on Samui it will, at the very least, show you you exact position.

I bought it from pantip plaza Chiang Mai, pantip bkk wanted 11k for the same thing :D

The company is called eagle gps, the landline number on the card I have is 053-288-060 the owners name is Maurice, I'm sure he'd mail it to you :o

I hope this helps :D

That sounds to be just what I am looking for, thanks very much.

Esri ( garmin thailand ) have just released a nuvi unit for 14750, its a great little unit, with touchscreen, maps are good, you wont do better in thailand as if you want to add the map to your unit it is a minimum of 11200,.

My Garmins have lots and lots of dirt tracks in the Thai countryside.

Interesting. As far as I know a GPS determines the place where you are but a road map on the GPS device (Garmin for instance) is added to the device by a different company, normally a road map company who sell their maps to the device (Garmin) manufacturer.

I understood that the road map comp. hires hundreds of students who drive along all the roads with special minivans with all kinds of electronic equipment. Normal existing highways and roads are of course well known but the dirt tracks have to be 'monitored' and added to the (Garmin) device by the road map companies.

If I'm wrong I would appreciate to hear how else it works...?

LP,

As far as I know ESRI who make the Garmin maps are a professional surveying company.

ESRI is the world leader in GIS (geographic information system) modeling and mapping software and technology.

GPS maps is a sideline , because I guess they already had all the info.

I just found this website for another GPS shop in Seacon Square.

I'm passing through Bangkok at the momment so popped into Global5 yesterday and picket up a G-Sat BT359S for 4,900B including map software.

They were very helpful and spent a good 30 minutes showing me how to use it and explaining how everything works.

20 minutes later I was able to explain to the cab driver why I thought he was running laps of Sahpan Kwai to add a few Baht to the fair by waving my smartphone under his nose and askng why he was turning right again when my GPS had been saying turn left for the last 5 minutes!

i bought a GPS fishfinder from EBay it is great caught some good fish but can't seem to download the GPS software of maps

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 310 a little over a year ago. Since moving to Koh Samui, I have little need of it, so it's for sale. I've never used it with Bluetooth, but that's one of the menu options, I don't know if it will function with your PDA or not. PM me, or post here, if interested.
