Thailand to become a telecom hub in Asia

BANGKOK: -- Thailand’s national telecom company has announced an ambitious plan to become the region’s key telecom service provider in the near future.

The company aims to be the region’s main telecom service provider, linking the region to other parts of the world, the Acting Executive President of CAT Telecom Public Company Limited (CAT), Vithit Sajjapong told TNA on Tuesday.

The company has had its eye on the regional market for some time, which is currently dominated by big players, like SingTel of Singapore, and AT&T of the United States.

The firm plans to expand its internet service, and to offer many new products, both for internet users and fixed line telephones.

With its current strength, CAT hopes to be a dominant internet provider in the near future, Mr. Vithit predicted.

The company is also in the process of asking for tenders for its planned CDMA mobile phone system.

This process is expected to be completed by the end of August.

After that, the company is going to look for new potential investors.

CDMA is an advance technological system for mobile phones. It provides a clear signal with no disturbances and a 100 percent fraud tuning protection.

CAT’s profits for first the half of this year was nearly two billion baht, exceeding its target by more than 600 baht.

The company’s total revenue in the January-June period was 17 billion baht.
