King able to walk, condition improving

His Majesty the King has gained more strength in his right leg after more exercise with a walker, the 11th statement from the Royal Household Bureau said yesterday.

The King can briefly walk and his general condition is improving to the satisfaction of doctors. His appetite has also increased, said the statement, quoting the Committee of Royal Physicians as saying. His Royal Highness Prince Dipangkorn Rasmijoti, the grandson of His Majesty, paid his first visit at the hospital yesterday.

Some 300 passenger vehicles yesterday began providing a free service for people travelling from Bang Khun Non intersection on Charan Sanitwong Road to Siriraj Hospital to visit His Majesty from 6am to 6pm.

Twenty Shan people from Mae Ai district in Chiang Mai and living in Ban Mai Mok Jam village, which was established on the initiative of His Majesty several years ago, signed well-wishing messages at the hospital. Sak Tha-aksorn, who led the group, said he was worried about the King's health and hoped it would improve soon.

Samak Khamkhet led a group of 60 Thai Muslims from Yala to sign messages for the King before they said a group prayer to wish for his speedy recovery. Samak said he believed that the King never mistreated Islam and loved all Thai people equally.

A group of senior citizens in Bangkok's Bueng Kum dis-trict performed a traditional dance to bless the King. They said the dance was meant to worship Lord Buddha and in-cur his blessings for a speedy recovery and protection of the King.

Ten officials from 12 media associations also paid a visit to the King at the hospital. A leader said the press confederation would hold a special television programme on November 17 to officially give respect to His Majesty on his 80th birthday.

Rabiatrat Pongpanit, chairwoman of the Happy Family Association, called on members of the public, especially celebrity figures, to dress properly when they came to the hospital to pay respects or sign messages for the King.

Dr Piyaskol Skolsattayathorn, dean of Siriraj Medical School, pleaded with thieves and pickpockets that had preyed on the crowds in the hospital compound to stop.

Police had earlier threatened to make public the names of those caught to further shame them, although the practice violated human rights.

Royal Thai Police spokesman Pongsaphat Pongcharoen said there were now 500 policemen stationed at the hospital and nearby areas to provide security and guard against crime, up from the original number of 270.

He said six suspects had been arrested, but police needed to obtain more evidence against them because the stolen items were not found on them when they were caught.

The officer said police were now preparing an operation to provide security for the King on the date he is discharged.

The infection in His Majesty's large intestine has subsided and he can now eat a variety of foods, the Royal Household Bureau said in a statement yesterday.

The reduced effect of the infection was verified after a blood test and His Majesty's general condition was good, the statement said, quoting the Committee of Royal Physicians.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden sent a personal message yesterday to His Majesty, blessing him and wishing for his speedy recovery, Swedish Ambassador to Thailand Lennert Linner said. The ambassador wrote the message from the Swedish monarchs - who travelled to Thailand to join the celebration of His Majesty's 60 years on the throne last year - at Siriraj Hospital, where His Majesty is receiving treatment.

Romanian Ambassador Radu Gabriel Mateescu, former South Korea prime minister Goh Kun and Shigeru Mochida, a deputy executive-secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN Escap) were among those that signed good wishes for the King yesterday.

The Phachochaban Foundation, which helps injured elephants, brought nine jumbos to the hospital to conduct a ceremony and pay homage to His Majesty.

The group also presented a piece of writing that says "Love Nai Luang", which they said was created by Phang Kamlai Thong, a female elephant.

Millions offer prayers

King is becoming more active, while his elder sister, Princess Galyani, remains conscious

Millions of Thais are now praying for the good health of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Her Royal Highness Princess Galyani Vadhana, who have both been receiving treatment at Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital.

His Majesty was admitted on October 13. As of yesterday, he had regained his appetite and could perform more active exercises.

His elder sister, 84, is being treated for cancer. On Thursday, the Royal Household Bureau issued the first announcement about the princess' health, stating that her condition was being closely monitored.

According to the bureau, the princess remained conscious and was able to move the left side of her body yesterday.

The princess received treatment for breast cancer 10 years ago, after which she had enjoyed good health until cancer was found in her abdominal cavity two years ago.

From early morning yesterday, a huge number of well-wishers flocked to Siriraj Hospital to wish His Majesty and Her Royal Highness good health.

The hospital also put up a picture of the princess next to that of His Majesty in the hospital's Centennial Pavilion yesterday. Well-wishing books were also available for people to sign for the princess.

HRH Princess Somsavali sent flowers to His Majesty and his elder sister.

Phra Raja Gura Vamadevamuni, the chief Brahmin priest of Devasatan Temple and the Royal Household Bureau, also came to the hospital.

"Brahmin priests will pray for her good health," he said, urging people to pray for the princess.

Yellow-clad people yesterday crowded the hospital to express their best wishes for the royal members.

Actress Sirilak Pongchoke was among the crowd. "I pray that His Majesty and Her Royal Highness enjoy a speedy recovery," she said.

Sirilak said she was so worried about the princess after hearing about her illness. She believed the princess' health meant a lot to His Majesty.

Dr Therdchai Jivacate, general-secretary for the Prostheses Foundation of HRH the Princess Mother, yesterday said everyone at the foundation was concerned about the princess' health. "She is very kind and benevolent," he said.

Her Royal Highness has supported various foundations and has worked hard alongside the foundation officials throughout the past several decades.

Out of gratitude and loyalty to His Majesty and Her Royal Highness, thousands of Thais have shown how much they are concerned about the royal members' health. Their concern was evident when they turned up at the hospital yesterday.

They were apparently relieved when the Royal Household Bureau's statements, which were released yesterday evening, mentioned His Majesty's improving health condition and how Her Royal Highness remained conscious and could move the left side of her body.

Throughout the past 13 days, 641,636 people have signed get-well messages for His Majesty. Honourable consuls from 12 countries were among those to sign the books yesterday.

Some 49,176 people signed get-well messages for Her Royal Highness.

The institute will be located on a 14-rai plot underneath Rama VIII Bridge on the Phra Nakhon side and be called The Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute for Classical Music, which she has approved.

Her Royal Highness is a known lover of Western classical music and has long supported musical training in Thailand.

Construction is expected to take four years after Cabinet approval is granted in the near future. The design of the institute's buildings will be based on traditional Thai arts. Her Royal Highness's personal pictures and details of her work in teaching French in Thailand will be put on display.

The ministry and Chiang Mai University will hold an exhibition in honour of Her Royal Highness from November 2-12. The exhibition will then be held at Mae Fa Luang University in Chiang Rai from November 16-25.
