Laptop Repairs

The combo DVD-RW drive in my Asus laptop has given up the ghost. It won't recognise any discs of any kind; says they are unformatted or unreadable in Windows, etc.. The hardware and drivers are all OK according to Windows.

There's a few laptop specialists in Tuk Com and elsewhere so if there's any particular one that is recommended, please let me know.

Many thanks,

NL

Your combo drive may need replacing. Depending on the age of your laptop this could be very expensive.

They've got a new slim external (USB) DVD burner at the "Hardware House" on the same level as Pattaya 2U. It's going for 3,700.

I had the exact same problem you describe... on a Toshiba laptop... the guy a Tukcom popped in a new one, and it worked great... i think it's a problem in the laser reader, that simply can't be repaired... has to be replaced... it did cost about 3,000 baht for a burner... i used the guy on the 3rd floor, in the far corner, which would be above the Powerbuy, on the corner side where the elevators/toilets are. Don't let anyone charge you an install charge, or require that you leave it with them... it's not necessary... replacement take two minutes... no software adjustments necessary.

While there be sure to check out the pirated cd's, mp3's, and dvd's... I think the $15 movie ticket admission prices in the U.S. are unreasonable, so help send that message.

as you exit the lift on the 3rd floor, i can recomend the guy on the left side, two shops down, he has a port wine stain on his face, good english, good service, only does laptops.

I recommend fantasea internet cafe on the second floor of Big C north pattaya. The owner is a farang called Tom

Oh it needs replacing alright. I purchased one on eBay and getting it sent over in the "diplomatic bag." I needed a drive for access in the meantime and 'Hardware House' was sold out. However, another shop had one left for 2100 baht. Deal!

This chap is excellent. He didn't have the one I needed but said he could install another one and change the drivers and config so it would work but said it could take a few days. When I said I had one coming from the US, he agreed that was the best way to go but offered to assist if I still had any problems.

We used Wattana opposite Foodland. We've been going there for 8 years, and they have always looked after us well. Because of their service over the years, products/warranty and ability to specially order items (like the 5th G 80g Video Ipod a few years back before it was officially released in Thailand) has made them the only place we go to for anything computer/electronic related.
