Marry In Thailand Then In Uk

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Couple of quick questions.

If I was to marry my Thai gf in Thailand at the Amphur, after she came back to the UK on a settlement visa, could we still get married "officially" in the UK, or would the UK see us as being married already.

Alternatively, does the UK recognise a marriage in Thailand, or must we get married in the UK to be officially seen as married under UK law.

Hope that makes sense.

Cheers

Lee

You'd be married already, if it was the full Amphur monty. All you'd need would be a certified translation of the marriage certificate into English to use in the UK - otherwise it could be misconstrued as a swimming award.

Yes thats right. After your married in Thailand you'd then apply for settlement for your then wife, which would be through the British Embassy. If you got it then the visa in your then wifes passport would say "spouse of yourname"

So by that you know the British Government has recognised your marriage.

We didn't get our marriage certificate translated (just forgot) and so far we have not come across any instances where that has been a problem. The mrs has NI number, bank a/c, job ect and so far so good. Although when were in Thailand this time, will try and get it done just incase.

Hope that of some help.

My situation is similar to Rj above.

If you did want a celebration in the UK, many people have a blessing.

If you get 'married', in the village, then yes you can have a marriage ceremony in the U.K.

If you get 'married', in the village and get it registered at the Amphur, then you can't get married in the U.K, if you do it will be bigamy, although it is with the same woman, presumably :o

If you have it registered at the Amphur, then it is a legally binding marriage and most certainly recognized in the UK.

We got 'married', in the village but never found the time to have it registered, so we got, 'officially', married at a register office in the U.K for the family to attend.

This is what my GF and I are going to do. Thai wedding with her family in Thailand which will not registered then fly to Aus and have another wedding with my family which will be the legally binding one.

Remember that if you have legally married in Thailand (at the amphur), and then you go and 'legally' marry in the UK (or other country) at a registry office, you are technically commiting bigamy! - because you are already married :o

And we all know what the maximum penalty for bigamy is........

Two mothers-in-law! :o

Scouse.

I pretend that with the same wife you just marry once, but submit and register the paperwork with the corresponding authorities.

If you love ceremonies however, you can always marry your wife as many times as you wish and your purse permits to do so.

Thats good enough to put in the jokes section of TV
