I'm surprised that know one is talking about the Olympics here. I haven't seen any Thai atheletes since the opening ceremonies. Does anyone know how Thailand is doing in The Games? And what events are the Thai athletes competing in?

Thanks a Bottle... :o

Yes, I heard about that woman weightlifter from Khorat.....Haven't gotten her name yet... Is Thailand now going to concentrate on female weight lifting now for future Olympics? :D

I'm surprised that Thailand is not really doing the high profile sports in the games. Take Gymnastics for example. They should hire one of those Chinese Gymanstic coaches, if they haven't done so already, and build up their program - I'm sure they could get it to Romanian levels, seing that Thailand definitely has more resources than that country.

As it stands now in the sport, it seems that the U.S., Russia, and China will be the favorites, but that doesn't always have to be... :D

Besides, I want to see pretty Thai ladies in Spandex doing acrobatics! ( insert bad joke here... :o )

Is it because most people have UBC TV (Un-Believably Crap TV) and UBC is an Olympics-free zone? I have watched some volley ball on channels 9 and 11, but it's not in English and the programmes are not advertised in the UBC magazine. I suppose I could search the web and make my own listings. Hmm, I think I will! Thanks for the post! :D

OK, 20 minutes later and I've got the web site, made a few notes of event times, and will just have to hope that some channel will show what I want! Here is the athletics info from the official web site for the 22nd August:

It was great to be part of the euphoria that errupted in the Colliseum in Thong Lo when they showed the weightlifting moment on the big screen above the stage.

I was genuinly very happy for Thailand and was full of Heiniken so I was standing on the foot rung of my stool and applauding like a very happy (nice) English football hooligan.

It was also my first night out in a fortnight which helped. :o

UBC is an Olympics-free zone

UBC 28 has 24 hour a day broadcasts from New Zealand tv, in English. If you have a bi-lingual tv, then maybe half of the free to air coverage is available in English.

Great gold medal win again in weight lifting last night. :D I really thought that the Russian's were unbeatable but the Thai competitor showed great determination to win. This time there were more Thai spectators who gave a good rendition of the national anthem at the medal ceremony afterwards. Maybe this time the medal winner will get to bring her own medal back home. :o

Thanks for the Info, guys! :o

Today, It seems that Suriya Prasathinphimi beat the boxer from Azerbaijan in the middleweight division, now qualifies for the quarterfinals.. But in the flyweight division, Suban Pannon was beaten by Varela Bhartelemy from Cuba.

In Badmiton, in the mens single semifinals, Boonsak Ponsana was beaten by Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia ( now the Gold Medalist... ).

Anyone know what other Sports Thai atheletes at the games have a good chance of Medaling? :D

Thanks for the info, Highwayman - have now stopped my decoder from skipping that channel.

Unfortunately, what is being shown now is women's football! Jesus, can't wait to see the walking race final :o

I don't recall the name, but a Thai male wheelchair racer earned a bronze in one of the events over the weekend.

Willy Blain, the French light welterweight world champion, has been knocked out of the boxing quarter-finals by Thailand's Manus Boonjumnong.

Boonjumnong, who won 20-8, received a motivational phone call from Thai King Bhumibol Adulyadej before the bout.

This was on Staurday , but guarantees at least a Bronze for Thailand , semi finals are on Thursday.

So does this mean that for the next Olympics, Thailand is going to train more and more Thai women to be giant brutish weightlifters? I'm pretty sure Thai women can be pretty good at other things!

Got a bronze in Tae Kwon Do today...was it a woman also ?

Yes, a Thai lady, Yaowapa Boorapolchai won a bronze medal today in Tae Kwan Do, featherweight division for women under 49kg ( By the way,how much is 49 kg in pounds? )

I'm looking forward when Muy Thai boxing is entered as a Olympic sport, especially Female Muy Thai boxing! :o

So Thailand has five medals so far.... For the number of atheltes they sent, it's pretty good haul for these games...

www.athens2004.com

in the left hand menu click participants then athlets then search for Thailand: there are 60 athlets from Thailand at the Olympics!!!

with 4 medals up to now: pretty good ratio!!! (USA 40 medals 1418 participants, Australia 21 medals for 711 participants!!)

That's more than I would have expected.

I see Toxin wants to have the games here in 10 years time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sure, why not? Just think of all the big-money construction contracts that can be awarded to the various cronies as the Kingdom prepares itself to become the hub of international amateur sports competition in Southeast Asia. :o
