Police setup check points to take stringent control of fuel smuggling

Central Police Command Commander Police Lieutenant General Adisorn Nonsri (อดิศร นนทรีย์) commented on the rising prices of oil which have caused illegal fuel smuggling to increase. The Police Commander has instructed Royal Highway Police to setup check points to curb the problem and better monitor smuggling.

The highway police will cooperate directly with the Office of fuel related crimes of the Royal Thai Police. Check points will be setup in near borders with neighboring countries as well as along roads commonly used for smuggling.

Police Lieutenant General Adisorn stated that the most stringent check points will be with borders adjoining Malaysia, which he states is experiencing the most activity. He also said that many smugglers are sea farers who have personal acquaintances with citizens from other nations.

Customs Department closely monitors oil smuggling along border

The Customs Department instructs customs checkpoints along the border to monitor illegal imports of oil from the neighboring countries after more than 600,000 liters of illegal oil were imported early this year due to oil price hikes.

Director-General of the Customs Department Wisut Srisuphan (วิสุทธิ์ ศรีสุพรรณ) reveals that more than 50,000 liters of oil has been smuggled to Thailand from Malaysia during October this year. He admits that the amount of oil smuggled to the country this year is much higher compared to that of last year.

According to Mr Wisut, oil from Malaysia is cheaper by 10-12 baht per liter. The department also calls for cooperation from the neighboring countries to help suppress oil smuggling and limit the amount of oil brought in by the Thai people.
