Many of would like to know what to eat to reduce cancer risk, but according to this recent article, very little is scientifically proven as yet, including some things that have made a big splash in the media.

The only things that are really proven to reduce risk are eating more fruits and vegetables, eating less red meat especially well done grilled meat, and LOSING WEIGHT. I included the link through brijit because if you don't know about this excellent site (which abstracts articles from many diverse sources) you might like to.

But Willett says it's becoming clear that most of the dietary risk is due not to specific foods but to Americans' obesity and bulging waistlines, which, he says, are second only to smoking as preventable causes of cancer.

it is not advisable to eat Plutonium or depleted Uranium. if one likes these dishes then it's best to have them with a lot of phrik nam pla and a bottle of red wine which helps to balance the negative effects (they say... whoever "they" are).

As a recent prostate cancer patient I went into all the alternative dietary info. A lot of it made sense, but as the post indicates nothing is proven. I think thats because you can't separate diet from other social or lifestyle factors, in terms of the likelihood of having cancer or other major illnesses. Also we can't escape the genes, which are a huge determinant of disease risk. Not so many years ago a Japanese diet of raw or steamed fish, vegies, and no alcohol was judged by many experts as the best. But of course now Japanese cuisine also features KFC, McD, cheese , bread and all those other great foodstuffs.

For sure, the heathiest, longest living people in the world, seem to eat a lot of fresh fish and steamed vegies, not much alcohol, tea or coffee, live in cool climates, exercise a lot, have satisfying work or something to do that they enjoy, have close friends outside their families, and, low rates of cancer. But as much as I aspire to the clean, green food part, it sounds a bit too sterile for me.

Looking for a naturally occurring food as a cure for cancer just isn't going to happen. There are foods that are helpful in that they assist or reinforce the immune system, others that act as anti-oxidants etc etc.

You can of course wait for the "scientific" backup that something is helpful, if you live that long. But don't hold your breath for the scientific identification of what causes cancer, they are still trying to blame it on a virus. And certainly never ask a medico for a natural "cure". If you are looking for natural rememdies then the medical extablishment and natural just don't go together. One group believes it is a lifestyle problem, the other that they need to discover a patentable and expensive cure for it. :o

Some cancers respond well to surgery but many do not. It was found long ago that most oncologists would never undergo radiation therapy themselves if they had cancer, form your own view on that.

Natural therapies are diverse and divided to an extent on what to do. Read recently about one group that claims all forms of milk don't cause it but encourages the growth, they may well be right looking at their statistics? Wholistic simply means looking at the body as a whole, not just the area in which the problem resides, the argument being that something is out of balance due to lifestyle etc. The medicos look for a drug to kill the bacteria, nuke the cancer, or suppress and disguise the symptoms (surely any thinking person can see that symptoms are warning signs that something is wrong).

If a cancer is developing then it is a sign of problems with your overall health, lifestyle and immune system. Genetics is also definitely a factor in this, some are predisposed towards certain weaknesses. Some people can abuse themselves and live a ripe old age, but that is generally an exception to the rule. Know your family history.

Part of the problem with the alternative health group is that many are involved with businesses selling vitamins and herbs, so will steer you towards their own amazing (and perhaps exagerated) products.

I decided long ago that if I were in that unenviable situation, then I would take the Breuss system of fasting on organic liquids. Cheap and starightforward. It should be googleable but certainly is extreme, but there again so is the alternative.
