Hey there people,

Im thinking of getting a tattoo here in chiang mai, i mean i really really want to get one, but im quite concerned about the safety. Im afraid of catching something (HIV) from the needle... so i was wondering if people who already got a tattoo here somewhere could help me out with figuring out which would be a good&safe place to get a tattoo. Im staying near porn ping tower - is there any good tattooing places nearby? Anyone have any suggestions? I'd be grateful to get some answers :o

It would be virtually impossible to get hiv from being tattooed - if your really daft enough to get one just use your common sense, make sure the person who defaces your body sterilises the needles. They should have an autoclave anyhow - if not then they are cowboys.

Met at 4th floor opposite the cinemas in Kad Suan Kaew does great innovative free-hand work. He uses totally sterile equipment, new ink, and has excellent personal hygiene (When was the last time you met a tattooist in a a spotless, ironed cotton checked shirt?). Met's prices are very reasonable. Naga in Loi Kroh Road is hygienic but charges tourist prices.

For original work by a good artist who is personable and uses clean equipment, I recommend Met.

HIV wouldn't be one of the bigger risks associated with tattooing. HIV dies once it hits air very quickly unless it's kept very very cold. Hepatitus is a different story, but you shouldn't worry about it in Chiang Mai. I would think most all of the tat shops - and especially the ones catering to falang in Chiang Mai - practice this type of safety. Just make sure you see the needle come out of the packaging, and that fresh ink cups are being used.

Most tattooists will happily let you make your design or assist those who are graphically challenged :o However be aware that depending on the size and location of your design it may not work as you expect on your body. For example long straight designs often don't work on the shoulder which is dome and round. Do a design and then take it to your artist, see what he says about location and if he suggests modifying it to suit the location either change the postition on the body or change the design.

if/when you get it - post a picture of the finished work. Always interested in seeing what people get done.
