Pattaya celebrates 80th birthday of HM the King

Everyone encouraged to wear yellow

Pattaya has prepared three main events to celebrate the 80th birthday of His Majesty the King, which takes place on December 5, a national holiday.

There will be a group ordaining, a walk-run rally, and a parade with festivities arranged at Bali Hai Pier. All those attending are requested to wear a yellow shirt, in honor of His Majesty.

A meeting of the organizing committee was held on November 20 at Pattaya City Hall, with Deputy Mayor Wattana Chantanawaranon in the chair, assisted by Deputy Mayor Verawat Khakhay.

The group ordaining to present merit to His Majesty will take place on Monday December 3 at 1 p.m. at Pattaya City Hall and on December 4 at 8 a.m. at Jittapawan Collage. This year will see 64 people attend the group ordaining.

The walk-run rally will take place on December 5, commencing at 2:30 p.m. from the Tourism Authority of Thailand Central Region 3 Office. The route will take participants along Second Road to the Central Pattaya crossroads, then turning left at Pattaya Beach Road, through to Walking Street, and finishing at the starting point. It is anticipated that 400 people will take part.

The celebrations at Bali Hai will also take place on December 5, with a parade starting at 5.30 p.m. in front of Royal Garden Plaza and ending at Bali Hai Pier, where presentations will be made to an image of His Majesty.

Wattana said that Pattaya police have made arrangements for traffic management, but that anyone not attending the activities should avoid the routes of the rally and the parade to help ease congestion.

People from all walks of life, wearing yellow t-shirts in honour of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej gathered outside Bangkok's Chitralada Palace to glimpse the monarch on Tuesday as the lavish celebrations on the eve of his birthday begin across the kingdom.

Some loyal subjects have travelled from distant parts of the country and have gathered since Monday night for the auspicious occasion.

According to Thai understanding, yellow is the colour associated with the revered monarch's birthday on Monday.

The world's longest-reigning monarch, who turns 80 on Wednesday, gives his annual address to the nation late Tuesday, the eve of his birthday which will be celebrated with various kind of activities all over the

country.

The King will grant an audience to the cabinet members and representatives from state agencies at the Dusidalai Hall Tuesday evening where they will express their best wishes to the King on the auspicious occasion of the 80th anniversary of his birthday on December 5.

In the provinces, government agencies held many activities to celebrate the royal occasion. The public gather to take oaths to be good persons and loyal citizens, and to view exhibitions on the sufficiency economy philosophy developed by the King.

On Tuesday evening, there will be a fireworks show "The Flower of Allegiance -- the 80th Anniversary of the King's Birthday" at the Royal Turf Club of Thailand in Bangkok.

The King was born on Dec. 5, 1927, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where his father, Prince Mahidol, was studying medicine. He became the ninth king of Thailand's Chakri dynasty on June 9, 1946.

Last year marked the 60th anniversary of King Bhumibol's accession to the throne which was celebrated with festivities attended by royalty from around the world. (TNA)

Are the bars open tomorrow?

I believe that the law was changed late last year allowing bars to open on Royal birthdays (but still not on religious days). But not sure how this is interpreted here in Pattaya ....

There is no law saying you cannot open bars/clubs on Royals BD but they (police) ask for your "cooperation" not to sell any achl. on those days and you know what it means when they 'ask' you for something ...

Irrespective of the law there are a couple of gogos that open evrey holiday. Both have the lights out outside but inside are jumoing as usual.

They are known to the cogniscenti .

Shenanigans at The Avenue was not selling booze today, but just about everyone else was! I visited a bar on Second Road almost opposite Mike's Mall and was admitted through the back door as the main entrance was darkened. TIP!
