Hi all,

I have my non immigrant O and will apply for an extention for one year at the appropriate time. I have the letters, proof of income etc. I work three weeks on and three weeks on and have to plan when I'll be in Thailand for the duration of the application.

Can anyone tell me how long I'll need to be around?

Cheers

Usually when you submit your aplication they will give you 30 days and tell you to come back when the 30 days are up. You should get the decision on your second visit.

Yes, they seem to have finally streamlined the process---mine takes 30 days as well even tho I apply in Samui and the application is processed in Bangkok.

Thanks all,

I'll be doing mine in Chiang Mai, though I'm sure that doesn't make any difference. During the process is your passport kept at immigration? If this is the case I'll need to have an extra week off work.

No. You get a stamp something like “application for extension is under consideration. Applicant must report to immigration office on <date>” and you get to keep your passport.

Don't forget you will have to obtain a re-entry permit stamp (extra form/1,000 baht) right after you get that first extension of stay under consideration stamp to keep it alive for your work trip. You enter that re-entry stamp information on next arrival card.

Sorry guys can I just clarify this:

So I apply for the extention three weeks or so before my visa runs out. Immigration (hopefully) put a stamp in saying it's under consideration and stamp an EXTRA month on the end of my original visa expirary date?

Thanks agaiin

It will be from your application date. So you want to go to immigration during the last few days of a 3 week off period and make application - then you will be back here before the 30 days expire. They are not strict on being 3-4 week early for application so if it gets down to a week you should still be fine. The idea to do so early is that you then have plenty of time to find missing items if need be.

It will be 30 days from the date you applied for the extension.

In 30 days when you get the ok. You will be stamped for one year from your orignal Visa expiry date.

Also when you get the extension you will have to report your address to immigration every 90 days. Providing you are in Thailand more than 90 days at a time. This can be done by post.

As said before when you get the extension dont forget to apply for a multi re entry permit or you will lose your extension when you leave the country. And have to start all over again

Well, that doesn't apply in Chiang Mai where greenmole is going to do his stuff. At least it didn't apply to the officer stamping my passport when I applied for my marriage extension in Chiang May in October.

Expiry data of previous 1-year extension: 19 Oct 2007.

Extension application date: 11 Oct 2007

Consideration stamp, next contact date: 19 Nov 2007

At the contact date, got new expiry date 19 Oct 2008.

That could be as they have changed policy without any notice and now seem to be using the expiration date of current stay as starting date for one year period - it was always entry date of current stay before. However the policy is supposed to be to return results in 30 days or less for all applications now so that begs the question of would your extension have been available if you arrived on the 11th of November? Have seen recent reports of people being called in early so that may indeed be the case.
