Need Help Spelling My Name In Thai

Featured Replies

Hi,

I was wondering if someone can help me with spelling my name in Thai. Just my last name(Thammarath ... pronounced Thammarat) is fine. I was able to find the spelling of Nakhon Si Thammarat, but I could figure out which part was the spelling for Thammarat.

Thanks,

James

ธรรมราช ?

In Thai, however, its not written Thammarath, its spelling is Thammaraj. I presume its the same word.

Thanks, the spelling was somehow screwed up when my family immigrated to the US. It's supposed to mean good governance.

In that case it's very straightforward: ธรรมรัฐ - good governance. (See Domnern Sathienpont, Thai-English Dictionary, Third Edition)

Here is an example from http://www.pub-law.net/article/ac140447.html:

"ธรรมรัฐ(GoodGovernance)เป็นแนวความคิดหนึ่งในหลายแนวความคิดที่ถือได้ว่าเป็นแนวทางหนึ่งในการแก้ปัญหาในการทำงานของภาครัฐ (Public Sector) ภาคเอกชน (Private Sector) และภาคเอกชนหรือองค์กรสังคมต่าง ๆ (Civil Society)"

"Thammarat", Good Governance, is one concept among many which is believed to be one path toward solving problems in the public sector, the private sector, and private organizations [leading to ] a civil society.

This is not the same word as ธรรมราช which, according to Lexitron is "ธรรมราชา [N] Buddha; lord of law."

ธรรมรัฐ is pronounced "tam-ma-rát" while ธรรมราชา is pronounced "tam-má-raa-chaa" and ธรรมราช is pronounced tam-má-râat.

Another word for "good governance" is ธรรมภิบาล (tam-má-pí-baan) a term which has gained great currency in recent times. A more extensive definition of this term can be found in "ร้อยคำที่ควรรู้" ("One Hundren Words Worth Knowing") by เสรี ีพงศ์พิศ, a compact, 150 page book selling for only 60 baht in local Thai bookstores.

My unconfrimed impression is that the word ธรรมรัฐ would be mainly used in the governmental context while ธรรมภิบาล would have more currency in the broader social and business context. Could someone comment on that presumption? Thanks.

Thanks for that. The OP said its the same as Nakhorn Sri Thammarat, which is ธรรมราช, so I don't know which is the correct one for his name.

Your last name "Thammarath" sounds like "ธรรมรัตน์" to me.

ธรรม, ธรรมะ - Buddha's teaching, virtue

รัตน, รัตน์, รัตนะ means แก้วอันประเสริฐ - precious stone, something great
