MiniVDO: The Phuket Election Commission are pleased with preliminary general election turn out at over 85%.

Summing up the preliminary election which took place on Saturday and Sunday December 15th and 16th, the Phuket Provincial Election Office Director Suparb Akkam stated that 25,956 people who registered to vote outside their residency came out to cast their vote, out of 30,394 registered people. This accounted for 85.04%, the highest number compared to the previous elections. Mr Supaab believes that those who failed to cast their votes must have been engaged with some business as Phuket is now in its peak season for tourism. He also reported the number of Phuket resident voters who cast their votes in the preliminary election at 6,546 people. Mr Suprab stated that the December 15 & 16th election indicates an active election on December 23rd which he expects over 70% of voters to come out to vote.

The walk procession was marked open by Phuket Governor Nirund Kalayanamit. Held at the Saphan Hin ground in the city area, around one thousand participants pledged to act against vote buying and promote a transparent election activity to mobilize democracy in the country. Mr Nirund led the people and students to announce three main vows which are to follow the democratic guidelines, to go cast their votes and to contribute to a clean and clear or transparent election on December 23rd.

The vote ballot number #10 at Bang Muang sub district in Thakuapa of Phang Nga has been re-located to the compound of Rajaprachanukroh 35, a tsunami evacuation shelter. The election commission decided to change the location after local residents reported that a group of people gave out leaflet copies from a newspaper which reported a foreign fortune teller who forecasted that a tsunami will occur on December 23rd. the news caused fear and confusion among residents as the old ballot box is located on the beachside. Waroh Hoskol, the Village Headman, showed our reporter the relocation copy of ballots and said the change relieved the villagers there.

The new ICT centre located at Saphan Hin in Phuket City is now filly opened for students and public. The facility is well-equipped with hi-technology under the cooperation of the Office of Phuket City and the Software Industry Promotion Agency or SIPA, Phuket branch. The Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana explained that her office contributes 10 million baht fund while another 15 million baht is contributed by SIPA to acquire computer hardware and software. Aiming to provide learning facilities and IT access to people and students, the ICT centre is divided into 4 zones. They are a Library, training room with computers, Good Net Zone with Hi-speed internet and educational activities zone.

Phuket offers OTOP products as gift sets on sale for the New Year Holiday period.

Premium quality OTOP or community products will be made available in sales as gift sets for the New Year period during December 20th to January 15th 2008 at the Phuket Provincial Community Development Office and all district offices, OTOP centres plus the Red Cross Fair to be held during December 29th to January 7th 2008. The provincial Community Development office chief Naeb Sinthong said the gift set price will be from 200 baht. It will comprise a great selection of OTOP products from Phuket, Phang-Nga and Krabi. He gave examples of them like pearl products, lampshades made from sea shells, batik products, processed seafood, and decorative items. The office will also exhibit the local product gift sets at the OTOP CITY fair in Muang Thong Thani arena in Bangkok.

The SMEs Promotion Office in Phuket expands more investment with businesses in Phuket for the year 2008.

Speaking about its support to the small and medium enterprises in Phuket, especially businesses which were damaged or affected by the 2004 Tsunami, the manager of SMES Promotion Office, Phuket Branch Teabjit Chantaraputiplakorn said his office aims to co-invest with more SMEs in Phuket, expanding from 320 million baht up to 600 million baht. He said it would focus on high value aqua animal farming like abalone and tuna exports. The office will also set up a provincial level committee on SMEs promotion to draw up SMEs plan for Phuket for it sustainable growth. In the year of 2007, the office has assisted local businesses which were affected by the tsunami, mostly hotels and the hospitality industry in Patong. The step-in of the office led to commercial banks’ loans to the businesses, he concluded.

The Phuket Public Health Office is organizing an exercise day and expanding networks for health to combat overweight problems.

Health diets, exercise and disease risk reduction will be highlighted during a health promotion day the Phuket Public Health Office plans to arrange on January 5th, 2008. The provincial Public Health chief Dr. Wanchai Sattayawuttipong said the one day event aims at promoting healthy living by exercise as well as to establish and promote health enthusiast networks. The activities are also conducted in honour of HM the King. Fun sport racing like sack races and relays will also be arranged for fun, he concluded.

Special - Japanese Asahi School visit Technical College in Phuket

A large group of Japanese students and accompanying teachers from the Asahi Senior High School, in Osaka, Japan visited Phuket Technical College students and their teachers at their campus in Phuket City last Thursday afternoon, during their 4 day cultural and educational visit to Phuket, staying at the Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa on Karon beach. The 229 Japanese students aged 16 and 17 years old each paired up with a Thai student aged just slightly older, to exchange conversations in whatever way they could and taste some local Thai delicacies, including some coconut sweet desserts and Som Tam or spicy papaya salad, which brought tears to the young Japanese eyes, but also lots of laughter and excitement for their Thai hosts. Then the Phuket Technical College cheerleading team put on an impressive display of their acrobatic skills to the appreciative Japanese audience. Let’s watch with them:

Our interview is with Christopher Byrd, who organised the 5th Tour de Thailand charity bicycle ride, from Chiang Mai to Phuket, 20 November to 16 December and raised funds for Thai people with leukemia, cancer & blindness through donations & sponsorship. About 20 tour riders came from Khao Lak on Sunday and met up with 30 day riders near Sarasin Bridge, then rode along the main Thepkrasatri Road, via Heroines Monument, up Patong Hill to Dolphin Park to end there.
