Special - Tsunami affected residents & sea gypsies Ko Sirey Phuket

To see or download mini-video, go to http://news.prd.go.th/news_detail.php?newsid=215715

As the 3rd anniversary of the tsunami incident in the Andaman is approaching, our special report today looks at ways of life of local residents who experienced the disaster 3 years ago, to see how they learnt to live with nature today:

Ah-jeh Pramongkit never takes a morning off for work. An old spoon/spade and a small bucket are tools she uses for collecting local clams. When there is low tide at Laem Tukkae, where the sea gypsies live, this type of clam would be picked for food. Walking on the beach to collect shells for 60 year Ah-jeh is not so easy now as her right leg is quite weak due to an injury caused by running in panic a few times after the 2004 tsunami. Ah-jeh admitted that even though 3 years have passed, she never forgot the scary experience on December 26th 2004.

Laem Tukkae in Koh Sireh on the east side of Phuket is home to a small sea gypsy’s community where Ah-jeh and her relatives live. Their way of lives are simple, the men go out fishing, repairing fishing tools while the women would deal with fish or sea animals they caught for a living. Even though they still fear any time they learn of the strong earthquakes, the authority’s tsunami evacuation drill last July contributed to their comfort, as well as better understanding of how to learn and handle such natural disasters. The community members follow official news and follow the guidelines.

Despite being a small community with only around two or three hundred population there, a tiny one compared to other tourist locations on the Andaman coast, any single human life is worth the same. The government put one tsunami warning tower here while tsunami evacuation signs are also put up along the village routes to indicate safe evacuation shelters designated at Ban Koh Sireh School and on the hill where a temple is situated 2 kilometres away. The tricycles are their vehicles of choice to take family members to safe places in time of danger. At least they know where to head for after learning about threats for natural disasters.
