Letter Of Residence - British Embassy

Featured Replies

I'm in the process of purchasing one of those Toyota Hilux vehicles, and as I don't have a WP, I need a Residency Letter from my embassy. It would seem that the embassy only require me to Register with them, then show them my passport & tell them what address I'm living at.

Question. Just how long is such a letter valid for? A week, a month, a year?

How long is a piece of string?

I have never used a residence letter more than 3 months old so at least that old I guess.

Before you make the trip to your embassy ask if they will accept a letter confirming your address from your local Amphur. Usually saves a long trip to BKK.

Validity of a month or so, is my experience.

Your local immigration office is another source for this letter,

usually FREE. :o

Hi Astral, does the letter from your local Immigration office give your address in Thailand?

I ask because the one issued by my local office does not.

Most definitely.

That is the whole point of the letter.

It used to be a routine matter, but there have been recent reports of some offices not issuing the letter.

Yes, thats why it's a pain that the one I get issued with merely states that I am resident in Thailand. Very inconvenient.

I guess it's just another one of those TIT things. Hardly ever are two things done the same way in different places.

Shame that all the Govt Offices can't get together and issue the difinitive proof of residence that could be used anywhere by farangs.

I for one would be happy to carry around some form of Thai ID card confirming my status and where I live in Thailand

But then again maybe that would be making things just a little too easy.

Yes my local office try that on too.

Complain that it's too much paperwork and that they don't get paid for it.

Maybe that's a hint at tea money, not sure.

Some immigration offices (mine included) only issue to people who are registered with them for visas (and possibly other things like WPs) that require 90 days reporting.

Did you give them proof of address when you asked for the letter?

Oh yes, took the house book, wife and marriage certificate.

Still only a letter saying I was resident in Thailand, nothing else.

Maybe I was just lucky, but when the car got registered in my name (after the 3 years paying for it, in my wife's name), they accepted the embassy letter I'd used to get my driver's licence (which was over a year old).

Your Thai drivers license works for that. I found that I can present it as proof of address almost anytime I am asked.

I'm not sure about the new ones though, but the old one has your address on it.

On a recent trip to Nong Khai, the bus I was travelling on was stopped at a road block and boarded by police asking for ID and passports of everyone onboard, I couldn't be bothered to get up to get my passport out of my bag, so I handed the policeman my drivers and it was completely acceptable.

Ps. the letter is valid for 3 months, my one from the South African embassy states that on the bottom. Not to sure about the Brittish one though.

Hi Property

I got 'one' last week from my local Imm office for free, took about 1/4 hour. Took wife, PP, wife ID/Tabean Bahn/Marriage cert & 2 photos of me.

Just one more point, though Property, My car collection date was ONE DAY after my current 90 day 'permitted to stay' period so I'll have to go back and get another one. Thought I'd mention it so you too don't have to do it twice like me!!!! :o

I think it is valid up until the date of your current visa stamp.

The ones I've received at Pattaya Immigration always show my address.

Pattaya Imm have always charged me 200 Baht but no receipt! Strange isn't it? :o
