One to add to the list:

VDownloader

Saves as AVI or MPG. Works for me.

This is another piece of cr*p software like Vixy. I key in the valid URL of the YouTube clip and get: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found. Stick to keepvid.com .

As I said, works for me every time.

Wow, thanks for the GREAT tip. I've used 3 or 4 of the most commonly available downloader programs, but this one was by far the simplest to use, and worked right off the bat, the first time! Thanks for my Christmas gift from YOU!

As for Windows Media Player, I have never got it to play .flv files. If anyone has, I'm sure lots of people would be interested to know how. :D

You will need FFDShow. Details on this here > http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/ho...y_flv_files.cfm

Downloads here > http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_so...ers/ffdshow.cfm

Thanks for those links Tywais. I already had FFDshow installed - can't remember which web site said to do it - but I didn't have the Gabest Flash Video Splitter installed. Now that it is, WMP can play .flv files with no problems. Many thanks. :o

One thing about both the WMP and VLC players is that neither appears to allow the playback position to be changed. Both have a progress indicator at the bottom of the screen, but clicking on it or dragging the pointer doesn't change the playback position, it resets it to the beginning. Not a major problem, but sometimes I want to skip a bit or replay a bit and can't.

I have one player that does allow this, and that one is called "FLVplayer" from here: http://www.martijndevisser.com/blog/flv-player/

This one allows you to drag the progress indicator at the bottom to any position. Unfortunately, the video and sound quality isn't too good, the worst deficiency by far is the sound which keeps "glitching" if you are doing other work on the PC - it's as if the player doesn't buffer enough and has to wait if the PC is busy. The sound and video produced by WMP is much better so I'll be using that one as default.

Part of my problem was using a Google.video link (MP4/wmv) instead of the YouTube one (flv). Appian FLV plays the flv but quality is poor. I installed FFDShow and Gabest splitter which allows the flv to be played on WMP and Zoom Player. I can scroll them to any play position. Only downside is the video quality of this particular clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArO_PHqZnnQ which seems easier to watch on the original YouTube than the other players mentioned. Thanks for everyone's help. Wish Cyberspace posters would standardize video formats though!

Glad it finally worked out for you, was trying hard to find a solution for you. Was a bit frustrating for me too in that I couldn't get a successful download and as such couldn't verify the results with mp4.

I've just tried WMP with FLV files again, and I can now drag the progress bar to any position and the playback continues from that position. I've no idea why it didn't do that before - maybe a few reboots were needed? :o

If you have firefox browser, get the plug-in "Download helper"

Indeed!:

I used to have about 6 different video downloaders installed in my Firefox - couldn't decide which one was best. I've now removed them all except for "Video Download Helper".

I found the simplest way to save You Tube videos is to download ' Realplayer ' for free off the internet. Once you have this the following happens : When you watch a You Tube video , in the top righthand of the video a Realplayer Message pops up asking if you want to save the video clip. If you click on it the video is permanently saved in the Realplayer Library. I download clips and films and then burn them to disc also using Realplayer. One of the best free downloads I have come across and very simple to navigate.

I don't bother with any programs to save flash videos. All the files are on your hard drive already, in your internet cache. I just go to that directory, find the file (sort by size and pick the correct time), move it to another directory, change the extension to .flv, and I got the movie. A plugin would be a bit quicker, but it's not needed.

This is absolutely correct, I have been watching this thread with growing amusement.

ON Fire fox go to:

"C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\6chqt3qv.default\Cache"

Not that hard to do. Once you have the cache make an icon on your desktop.

When you watch a movie no matter what, click on the icon and bring up the cache. The movie can then be dragged out of the cache onto the desk top and re named with the appropriate extension. .flv or .wmv or whatever. GOM player takes care of mpeg, avi, divx, and flv. Real alternative plays real media without the cumbersome piece of junk from realplayer.
