Question About Passports When Travelling

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

me and my misses are living in Belgium. She has a permanent visa for schengen countries but we are going for the first time on a trip to Thailand since we got married last year. Now I was wondering what would be the best way to cross borders with her passports..

I mean, when we are leaving the airport in Belgium, does she has to show her Thai international passport? Or should she show her belgian alien passport?

Also when arriving at Thailand what does she has to show there? Her Thai international passport or just her thai id card?

And what about when we are coming back to Belgium? What at the departure in Thailand and what about arrival in Belgium?

Thanks all

You use the passport of the country you enter/exit. So Thai passport on entry/exit of Thailand.

When my wife travels to China from the US, she has her Chinese passport. When she returns to the US, she shows them her Chinese passport and her US Greencard to prove that she has status to enter the US since there is nothing in her passport that says she has PR status. Not sure in the case of Belgium. Is there anything in her Thai passport that says she has PR status in Belgium? If not, she should have the Belgium Alien Passport in addition to her Thai passport when returning.

Upon exit of Thailand both passports are shown to check-in staff when a visa would normally be required to prove ability to enter the destination country.

In her passport there is actually the permanent visa stamp (label) which we obtained from the Belgian Embassy in Bangkok after we married.

So if i'm right she should show her thai travel passport in Bangkok? Even when she's entering her own country? Or is this to avoid problems when we are returning back to Belgium on which they would say it has an exit stamp leaving thailand but no entry stamp?

Anyway, it's very confusing..

Yes you do have to have a passport to enter your country without a lot of questions. Use the Thai passport to enter and exit Thailand. She will have an entry and exit stamp in that Thai passport but she should not need it outside of Thailand as she can use the other passport for entry back into Belgium.

Perfect, thanks !
