.....Not to mention, what they cannot carry, they deface. And whoever is unfortunately in that home, they rape & kill?

That's a bit over the top !

Naka.

Nope, I am not playing it up.

Dunno whether Kitty's comments are factually correct or not.

Ermmmm......I dont read newspaper daily , nor do I watch the TV at home because I have no tv at home.

I only knows about somethings only when people are discussing it hotly and I followed the links to the reports.

But otherwise, the rest are thru words from horses mouth about the housebreaking & defacing.

One had his bedroom's covers stripped off the heavy huge ultra expensive king size bed and some few people squat on it with their shoes (shoes prints on it.) and errmmmm ..... fertilised the mattress.

another has grandfather's clock glass broken, and things strewn around.

Two maids crawled out thebackyard wall, runs to the neighbour to hide. police took thier time coming. because one of them felt very sure that one of the voices belong to a neighbour, which is kind of a thug of the neighbourhood, not working and hanging around the estate corner all day, he was supposedly befriended by the owner so they thought they were safe. The maid mentioned it to the neighbour who helped called the police.

The maid was subsequently threatened and requested to return to Indonesia.

Does anyone remembers the Canny Ong case? Where she was aducted from a busy KL shopping mall?

I doubt anyone here had been familar with a case in Singapore where a neighbour rob & sodomised his neighbour in her home.

She was a 80+ year old grandmother. That neighbour robber/rapists is 40+ with a young wife and 2 kids. He rob from her, a television set; her cash & jewellery.

Another more recent case will have been a youngster, a ex lover of the daughther of the home owner. The youngster sneaked into the home; stabbed the owner, a maid and terrorised the rest of the family before fleeing with loot from the house.

I may just be spreading gossip, but there was enough rumours circulating enough that I have folks heed those rumours and choose more secure places for their 2nd home/retirement home. They usually choose gated communities which may be pricier but worth a peace of mind.

I'm glad everyone has these misconceptions about Indonesia.

Jakarta is Asia's best kept secret.

The last thing it needs is the mouth-breathing, singlet wearing riff-raff that Thailand attracts.

I'm happy that Thailand isn't some kind of heaven-on-earth that TAT would have you believe. The place would be heaving with bleedin' farangs then. Anyway, I'm glad to report the total absence of the tatoo and singlet crowd up in Isaan.

What's with all the singlet hate? I have several very nice ones and not a single tatoo. Hey, it's hot around here!!

I'm not comfortable anywhere that has religious police. I'll just stay in Thailand.

AMEN to that brother! :D

That's why I left the US and the religious radicals (Republicans) there :o

so, instead you move to a third world junta with radicals bombing in the south on a daily basis.......when your midlife crisis breaks i am sure you will be more lucid

A bomb never has gone off in any proximity to me. I was a crime victim in the US, however. This junta or any other Thai has never told me I must be like them or be demonized as unpatriotic, evil or insane. You may have missed some of the political muck in recent elections, I did not. When you are at war with your neighbor because he has a sign in his lawn supporting another candidate, when you only associate with those at work who back your candidate, when politicians stand up with a straight face and say that Gay marriage will unravel the fabric of society :o when the American president states that God told him to Invade Iraq, :D ...... yes, I did seek safer ground. The people that intentionally divide the country to win votes, don't realize that the damage lasts long after the election is over. Lucid enough for you??

while i appreciate your criticism of of your idealist view of the U.S., you certainly do not seem to be very versed in either world based reality, or, particularly, Thai reality on the subjects that you seem to detest in your home country. we are talking about Thailand, are we not?

Dunno where you guys get this idea of a "religious police" in Malaysia. There is a religious department that effectively police the muslim population in the northern states mainly to prevent khalwhat (sp?). They probably exist also in the south but are insignificant. I used to enjoy a glass of wine or two with a muslim bar manageress in KL and asked her about such things. She just laughed and said don't worry about it. If you are non-muslim they have no jurisdiction over you and you have nothing to worry about. There was a very well publicised case a while back of an American and his wife getting into bother but that was only due to an over zealous local official. That sort of thing happens anywhere, a bit like off duty policemen shooting tourists, but never in Thailand :o .

The Malaysian police/immigration do get tough on illegal immigrants and often conduct sweeps through areas frequented by illegals and are none too gentle with the ones they pick up. But if you are here legally you have nothing to fear. If the Thai police adopted similar tactics against foreign wrongdoers maybe we wouldn't have to endure much of the labyrinthine visa regs.

Anyhow, it all just proves that if you are looking for a place where you can fit in, be accepted as a citizen, own land, work without having to get a work permit, don't have to do visa runs, don't get discriminated against etc etc then go back to your country of origin. That is the only place in the world you will ever truly belong, even if you get Thai citizenship you will still be a farang plain and simple.

Google it, you'll find lots of articles, here's one from an Australian paper;

From correspondents in Malaysia | February 20, 2007

A MALAYSIAN state plans to recruit "spies" from the public to snoop on unmarried lovers and report them to Islamic religious authorities.

The Terengganu State Government plans to enlist the part-time spies to look out for un-Islamic behaviour, such as unmarried couples kissing or holding hands, the Star daily newspaper said.

"Some of these 'spies' could be waitresses or even janitors at hotels acting as auxiliary undercover agents for our religious department," the head of the State Government's Islamic and Welfare Committee, Rosol Wahid, was quoted as saying.

"Accurate details are required for the enforcement officers to act, otherwise they could be pouncing on married couples."

Last October, religious police in another part of this mainly Muslim country caused an outcry when they mistakenly raided the rented holiday apartment of a Christian American couple on suspicion that they were unmarried Muslims in "close proximity".

Singlets (I have many), tattoos (just 2) and at the moment, I'm mouth - breathing due to some nasal conjestion... Maybe I should run up to Pai and push over a policeman? :D

That would teach me a lesson! :o

Might I just add, Malaysia is still not a bed a roses for foreigners buying a home there too.

Rules change on a whim, affecting those who already made purchases too.

I remember there was this rule, that was suddenly implemented that Foreigners who own/have homes /want to buy houses in Malaysia need to put up a 100,000 ringgit surety for every home?

Then when people got cheesed off and stop buying those homes, they hastily remove that rule? Or is it still there, but to facilitate sales, they merely suppressed it and waiting to spring it again?

And the crime factor, where unlived in homes are regularly broken into, for the TV, Hi fis & whatever valuables in the place? Not to mention, what they cannot carry, they deface. And whoever is unfortunately in that home, they rape & kill?

The last paragraph surly refers to Samui :o
