engrin Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 My TW has been recommended to Jola (sp?) Hospital in Bangkok. She wants to have her thyroid checked. Has anyone heard about this hospital? She was reommended by a Thai man who says they did wonders for his thyroid after 4 years of inaffective treatment in Chonburi. We live in Chonburi and will be taking public transport to Bangkok. The bus lets off in BangNa or Ekamai Station. Is there a SkyTrain stop near the hospital or what is the best way to get there by public transport? If anyone knows anything about Thyroid problems or treatment advice/experience in Thailand I'd love to hear about it. I will be googling the next few days, our trip to the hospital will be on Friday.
Sheryl Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 This is Chula Hospital, short for Chulanlonghorn. It is a major tertiary level Government Hospital located near Mah Boon Krong shopping center. From Ekamai take the sky train to Siam Center and then either walk from there or change ot the Silom line and go to National Stadium (1 stop from Siam) and walk from there. Slightly closer to the National Stadium stop but can be walked from Siam. Chuls does have very good specialist in all areas but being a government hospital it is not possible to directly see one. A lot of red tape and screening by general practioners (often interns or medical students) even if you have a letter of referral in hand, and this process takes a very long time with long waits at every stage. It will take days for sure and possibly a week to actually mneet a specialist and if any complex tests (isotope scans, mri etc) are bneeded, waiting lists for those. Unless you are REALLY short on funds I would suggest going to Bumrungrad which is the hospital with the most specialists in thyroid; there you can make an appointm, ent directly with a top specialist and see them straight away, also can usually get any needed tests done same day. Costs more ibn cash but saves a huige amaount of time and hassle and possibly frepeat travel. I recommend the following doctor at Bumrungrad altho there are others on staff who specialize in thyroid as well: Dr. Rosanee Valyasevi Medical School : - M.D. Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University (First Degree Honor), Thailand, 1988 Board Certifications : - Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, 2003 - Diplomate of the American Board of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism,2004 - Diplomate of Thai Board of Internal Medicine, 1992 Fellowships : - Endocrinology, Howard University Hospital, USA, 1995 - Endocrinology, Mayo Clinic, USA, 2000 Special Clinical Interestss : - Thyroid Diseases, Parathyroid and Calcium Day Time Location Tue 09:00 AM - 15:00 PM Med/Surg NS 7 Fri 09:00 AM - 12:00 PM Med/Surg NS 6 Sun 09:00 AM - 12:00 PM Med/Surg NS 6 Good luck! Wherever you decide to go, be sure to bring a letter from whomever has treated your wife thus far summarizing treatment and tests given as well as all test results.
lopburi3 Posted January 18, 2008 Posted January 18, 2008 Chula is located on the corner of Rama 4 and Ratchadamri Road (across from Lupini Park) and the main center is in the 16 story building directly at that corner. Both Skytrain and BTS cross at that intersection. But as Syeryl said it will likely take more than one visit to start proper treatment and it is always busy (opens about 0630 and there will have been those sleeping to be first in line). From your comment on public transportation wonder if Saint Louis Hospital or another mid range place might be a better choice than Bumrungrad? For non Thai speakers there is great advantage to having US trained physicians (whose English is likely much better for asking about symptoms) but for Thai am not so sure that makes up for the huge price difference at that hospital. Of course if you have adequate insurance that may be the deciding factor.
