I stay in Thailand. Work takes me around Asia/Asia pacific, and I never stay here longer than 1 month, then I am called back to work.

I have just found out that my return has been delayed by a couple of days and my visa runs out on the 18th. I can get an overstay from immigration in Phuket town for 7 days, or just pay the 2 day overstay at the airport. Both are classed as overstays??

Does it look bad in my passport to have either an extension for 7 days or a 2 day overstay fine on the way out?

My family is here and i don't want a problem when I next return from work.

Worst case scenario then i will do a border run.

Thanks in advance.

I'm too worried that an overstay note in my passport might be taken negatively in the future, so I avoid overstays (and for obvious reasons).

Can't you just extend your current visa? Have you got a work visa or tourist or...? It may be alot easier if you just extend it.

I would'nt overstay, although another guy from Thaivisa.com did for a few months and he got let off. However, I'm not sure of the consequences for his future travels should he wish to come back to Thailand.

A 7 day extension is just that, it is not an overstay but an extension of your permission to remain in Thailand. 2 days overstay is not the end of the world, but if you are regularly getting visa exemption stamps regularly, and may need tourist visas in the future, then I would try to avoid it if possible.

Getting an extension or a border run is your best bet, both have the same end result (one 7 days one 30), for about the same cost - 1,900 baht for extension at local immi - but the extension will be far less hassle. This will only be slightly more expensive than your overstay fine, but in the long run avoiding this little 'black mark' in your passport could be priceless.

A 7 days extension from Immigration is no problem and routine.

A 2 days overstay gets a nasty stamp in your passport and in the unlikely event you get stopped by the police before you get to the airport you could get arested.

As I said the extension is quite normal and ok.

If you (like me) travel a lot it's best to avoid overstays if at all possible.

If you have a 30 day visa exemption you should be able to get a 7 day extension at your local immigration for 1900 Baht (take your ticket). Although this costs more than a 2 day overstay IMHO it is a better course as it avoids the nasty 'overstay' stamp in your PP which may jepordise entry to some other country in the future.
