Following the good news that Garro has had his book published, I wonder if there are any other TV members who have published a book? I'm toying with the idea myself, but am still writing the first page :o

Any advice re publishers, tips and advice? Perhaps we can pin a list of books (good and bad!) that have been published by TV members

There is a local guy here in Udon who did hi own book, on riding. Not sure how he went about it, he only speaks french, so I think that limited things for him. Had no marketing plan therefore he sold about ten books to his friends none of which read french :o

Another individual has created a program where in he does maps for designed specifically for riders. He ahd a marketing plan, created a web site for riders that is popular and he developed point of sale contacts, seems to be doing OK.

Now matter what you create if you can't sale it, it's a hobby.

I would also like to hear about others experence.

By the way the French guy in now working on a second book, he was trying to find a cohort in crime to translate the book to english. Possibly if he can do that and them create marketing plan, he might just pull it off.

Published four books and now working on a fifth. It helps to have a captive audience (students who MUST buy the book), and belong to an organization that'll print it (your employer). And ooohhh, the BIG MONEY! I've made $500 in 2 years! :D

I've had a book published, a long time ago. It resulted from a time when I worked as an editor of a magazine about rare books and it was a guide to collecting modern first editions, including sections on conditions, trends, dustjackets, values and a guide to the most sought-after authors - Graham Greene, Wodehouse, Christie, Waugh etc.

I was commissioned to write a second book - a survey of the gaudy coverart on paperback potboilers from the 50s and 60s, but the publisher went under before he issued it.

I wish you the best of luck Simon.

The hardest part is moving from the 'toying with the idea' to getting your arse in the chair.

One thing I have learned so far is that you are allowed to stink as much as you like in the first draft of a book.

If you are like me, your first draft will stink.

The important thing is to keep writing until the end.

Later you can go back and make it readable.

I am amazed at the number of thaivisa members who have written books.

Where is peaceblondie these days?

I remember him saying that he wrote an opus that has yet to be published.

I wrote a few chapters about petroleum gases, bimetals, and basic electricity in a service training manual(s) for a company. We had an excellent proof reader who straightened out all my failings.

I do have a friend who has just published her second childrens book. She has set out a marketing plan and has worked at it with due dilligence. She intends to market other items to go with her series of books, toys, tshirts etc. I shall wear one of the shirts while in Thailand in a couple of weeks. You can see her work at brianasneighborhood.com

When last we talked she was pitching it (her Briana character) to the Cartoon Network.

We'll have lunch next week and I'll see how thats going.

She felt stongly in her project, felt there was a niche for her idea and has pursued it for several years.

Certainly I would only publish a book for 'fun', not for the small amount of revenue that it might generate. Both my parents published books and academic papers, (in French - although they were mother-tongue English, French was apparently the language of literature....)

I had a few articles published in academic journals when I worked at a University.

Of late I have been writing humorous articles about Phuket and Singapore some of which are being published in the My Phuket magazine.

Writing a novel just seems so daunting. I am kind of hoping if I write enough articles and short stories they will one day just magically form themselves into a novel.

Does anybody know of a good route to take if your'e not a good writer? i.e. using a "ghost" writer or whatever they are called.

I've had an idea for a book for years. I've got the plot and set the scene and basically know how i want it to span out. It's a story that has a very serious message to it but is also quite funny. However, when i finished my Masters Degree, it sort of took all the fun out of writing and now i just find it to be a chore and too daunting.

I also think there is a certain skill with words, that good writers have, that keeps the reader captivated and wanting more. Unfortunately i just don't think i have that skill.
