Do you know anywhere in thailand that teaches sailing, ideally with trimarans?

Yep, try Phuket Yacht club at Ao Yon in Phuket

www.phuketyachtclub.info

The website gives the impression that this is just a dinghy/childs club, however, you will find that there are a number of adult sailors there who are happy to give help.

You will also be able to sort out formal instruction i would think.

Trimarans are a bit of a niche area, though i know of a couple in Phuket and i m sure one of the owners would be happy to take you out.

www.omycsailing.com is the racer's website mostly for the sailing in Pattaya; again there are many multi sailors who would be happy to take you out.

It all depends on level, if you already know what a tackline, what a mainsheet and what a traveller is, then chances are you can leap on a tri and then learn the nuances of how to avoid overpowering it to the point of danger, how to sail hot angles etc etc that come with sailing tris.

if you are more of a beginner, i'd suggest doing a sailing course, learn the basics on a mono and then get onto one of the tris and race it for a season; in that time you'll learn everything there is to know about sailing a picklefork around. Most of the tactics and techniques aren't that different in concept to a mono, it just happens at a much higher speed and the slowness in tacking plus the limited upwind pointing and quest for speed vs depth downwind means the typical leadbelly might not be tactically quite the same but concept of sailing.... pretty similar.

PM me and I can line you up some rides perhaps in Pattaya...Phuket is the only other place with a decent number of multis that I know of, Samui is a bit more limited.

I sail a sportboat, so fairly similar with how Tris sail (a lot more like us than the keelers are, especially downwind).

Note this excludes any advice on old tris like Pivers and Hartleys and the like, which are strictly the domain of pott smoking hippies and new age types that lie around using massage oils and pondering the meaning of life with their herbal teas and tie dye frocks. I know naaaaaaaaaaathing about that sort of thing.
