Commerce Ministry to hold International Education Exhibition 2008

The Director-General of the Department of Export Promotion, Mr. Rachane Potjanasuntorn (ราเชนทร์ พจนสุนทร), says the International Education Exhibition 2008 will showcase the capacity of international education in Thailand. The event will be held at Queen Sirikit National Convention Center from February 1st to 3rd this year.

Mr. Rachane says the exhibition is expected to generate at least 15.6 billion baht of income to Thailand. He says the country has potentials to be an international education hub in the Asian region.

At the exhibition, around 144 prestigious and international education institutes from 361 countries will present their academic specialties to interested students and attendants who may wish to further their education overseas.

At the same time, many Thai international education institutes will present their academic programs, ranging from basic to higher educations, including vocational certificates and diplomas as well as tutorial certificates. Thus, more Thai students would decide to study in Thailand, and the country would save more than 40 billion baht of oversea education expenses.

I think the bright minds completely miss the point of INTERNATIONAL education. The true purpose of an INTERNATIONAL school is not to make Thais more international, but to provide standard educational services to an INTERNATIONAL group of students- that is why, for example, the true-blue INTERNATIONAL schools in Thailand limit the Thai enrollees to a percentage of the student population. Even the brightest, bestest, most well-staffed public school EP program will never be INTERNATIONAL because it will have nearly 100% Thai students.

This point often gets confused because of the number of schools which are named international simply because they have chosen to be.

Another hub???

Considering the press release is related to education, they could have got someone to proof read it first.

The Thais that go to study overseas do so because they know the quality of education provided here is not up to par. They will go overseas to study regardless.

As for the international schools here, I would love to see them compare their A Level/GCSE results with schools back in the west just to see how they stack up. I would think that they significantly under perform when compared to a similar school.

This is what it's really about - keeping more of the lovely lolly, that the Chinese-Thais are happy to bestow on their darling offsprings' overseas education, inside Thailand. It certainly isn't about raising education standards in the country.
