Anyone knows what the better, reasonably priced GPS is at the moment?

Important things for me would be the golf courses around Pattaya/Eastern Seaboard, and Bangkok city. Having the LPG fuel stations mapped would be a definite plus as well!

I basically want to let my drivers get around more efficiently with the guests of my hotel. They do know their way around, but a customer just telling the name of a golf course or hotel in Bangkok tends to create some problems.

Oh, and it has to be easily movable from one car to another!

Been looking at the Mio range, and it looks promising at between 12000 and 17000 Baht. Reviews?

Cheers

I played with the Nuvi 200W a couple days ago in gadgetrend in BKK. Great little device for around 18700. I didn't buy it because I was looking for something that would augment my aviation geared 196 when flying low and slow with the airplane and also cruising in the speedboat. It didn't seem quite right for this, but I'll keep thinking about it.

I don't know anything about the Mio and have never even seen one. I have two Garmin units, one is a former top of the range 2610 Street Pilot and the other is an eTrex Legend CX hand held. Both do basically the same thing but the 2610 has a much larger screen and talks. I had the ESRI map installed by Gadget Trend and must say that I am quite impressed. I just found Pattaya and searched for golf and there were MANY golf courses that it found. The 2610 is no longer made but Gadget Trend still sells them for 35.900 baht. I bought my 2610 off eBay for about $220 and paid 7,500 baht for the ESRI map already installed on a one gig CF memory card. I would guess that you would be quite happy with the Nuvi 200. The wide screen Nuvi is called the Nuvi 200W. My eTrex has the Rotweiler map and I keep the unit in my glove box in case I get lost. It quickly and easily finds the way home from anywhere but the ESRI map is better.

As far as changing vehicles, just pull the cigarette lighter plug out, pick up the unit and take it to another vehicle. I use the bean bag mount that just sits on the dash. Many use a suction cup. I prefer the bean bag. Before I had the GPS, I was very careful to keep on the main highways. Now I am able to see a lot more of the country, save a time and fuel and never worry about getting lost. I am now a firm believer and love these amazing devices.

The Nuvi200 seems quite good value. Can't go wrong with Garmin when talking GPS!

Kind of hoping anybody had some experience with the Mio, they seem to get heavily promoted currently and are quite cheap.

I think I saw the c220 priced at 11,900 Baht. More info on this model here.

Monty,

The c220 for 11,900bt I would assume is no map so add another 7,500bt = 19,400bt, the Nuvi 200 is a better deal for 14,500bt contact Mr Art [email protected] will send the unit to you via post, ready in a couple of hours after you send the money.

Art at Dynatrend gives great service. He put my map on a CF flash card and shipped it direct to me. I'm well satisfied with the communication and the service.

Went out and bought the mio c220.

11,900 Baht, includes the Thai map, which is extremely detailed even where I am out of town. You can chose to install the map with the Thai script markings or the English transliterated markings. Unfortunately you cannot switch between both, it's either one or the other.

The device itself can be set in a multitude of languages.

Searches on shops, fuel stations, hotels etc can be done in either Thai or English, regardless of which map is installed.

Free map updates can be done from Speednavi's website, speednavi is the company which made and maintains the Thai map.

You do need to call them to get an authentication code based on the license you receive with the device, but this was pretty painless with reasonable English capable operators...

Seems to have a pretty good GPS receiver as well, I even have 5 satellites visible within my house, many much more when in the car!

Looking good so far

Tried a friend's Mio on a trip Pattaya Sisaket.

Average results I would say

Some bugs.

On highway sometimes it says "turn half left" and....you continue on the parallel to the highway with all the shops and stopped trucks. :D

Sometimes gives vocal infos in contradiction with their map ...Better to follow the map :o

In town (Sisaket and small issaan towns) it can make you lost .You have to go left .Mio decides you go straight then 3 times wright and impossible to do (the initial left turn was possible,no road sign forbidding it)

It says too sometimes, you have to go further than the crosspoint where you have to change direction and to make a Uturn

You ask the shortest way?OK you could finish in a dirt track in a small village .Way was correct but I was happy it was not rainy season :D

Anyhow I arrived at my destination .Mio lost me for 10 minutes on a 6,5 hours trip. That's why I call it "average"...only if you have a driver with some common sense :D
