Hi,

I've been recently thinking about going to University in thailand, first of all it's cheaper, second of all I'm a diving instructor and would love to travel around thailand freelancing.

The problem I've got is that I dropped out of school when I was 14, I'm 23 now, do you guys know if I could retake some of high school to get required qualifications to start university in thailand? I'm a british passport holder and have no knowledge of the Thai language.

If you could send me some information regarding where in thailand I can take the qualifications I'd appreciate it.

Best regards

Mike

lots of luck as you don't speak the language - that should probably take the best part of 5 years to achieve the proficiency needed for university - then you would have to apply and gain entry, in the mean time how will you support yourself ?

Thai language skills are not necessary to attend a university in Thailand. If you want a Thai program, then Thai language is necessary, but there are plenty of Thai universities with English language based international programs. There are students from all over the world attending them. As you have no high school diploma (the British call it something else), then you will have to take a GED, general education development test. This can be done in Thailand easily and cheaply. There is much information on this topic in the Teaching in Thailand section of this website. Look at the Continuing Study in Thailand section in the pinned box.

From the tone of the posting it was assumed a Thai university was being considered - and yes there are universities with English programmes and a search of the internet should bring these universities up for you.

Many international undergrad programs in Thailand: Thammasat, Chulalongkorn, Bangkok University, ABAC, etc. However, most of them require 4 years of full-time study, so you might not be able to do the traveling while freelancing thing.

Ramkhamhaeng, an open university, could be a better option, but I'm not familiar with any international programs they might have.

Might want to decide upon the program first, then see what the admissions requirements are and work towards it from there.

Don't forget ABAC which has plenty of undergraduate international programmes. Not cheap though and as with all Bachelor Degrees in Thailand it requires 4 years of study. I think you'll end up paying up to 10,000 pounds in tuition fees etc.

P.S. It is illegal to drop out of education when you are 14 in the UK. Didn't your parents receive visits from the truant officer and threats of legal action?
