Looking for some info for a friend.

She qualified as a teacher (from the UK) a few of years ago but after being subjected to a placement at an inner city school she got a bit disheartened & kind of gave up so now works at the British museum doing tours as it is still a form of teaching but much less perilous

She is thinking of moving to thailand to take up classroom teaching again & for a change of pace & was wondering, with her qualifications where would she be able to work (government schools, uni's, private schools???) & what would be a potential salary range?

Her qualifications are:

Degree in English

UK teaching qualification (PGCE)

A years classroom experience

She also has CELTA from her backpacker days & has some experience teaching english as a second language too whilst on the road.

She should be able to get one of the better jobs that are available but tell her to be careful and to look closely at any school that is desperate to employ her and will take her on "unseen".too

Some schools are great, but others are very badly managed and if she came a cropper in the state system in the UK, it is possible she might not cope with the trials and tribulations of an autocratically run Thai school. She should be qualified enough to work in any of the school types that are in Thailand.

The best advice is to come over and take a look, meet some people, take a look at the schools, and see what it would be like herself.

As for salaries (these figures are vague but are accurate IME for Bangkok)

Government school : 28 - 35,000

Private Thai school: 30 - 55,000

International School: 80 - 180,000

Language schools: 30 - 55,000

With her qualifications she could teach in any of the schools here in Thailand.

65,000 to 120,000 baht/month, plus end of contract bonus and airfares.

The top international schools would prefer more than one year classroom experience in home country but she may be lucky and get more.

Thanks for the adivce, when I say disheartened I mean more, threatened & abused on a daily basis by students & when complaints made, parent would come & threaten her with physical violence on one or two occasions too, so she can handle the politics but is hopeful that Thailand hasn't quite reached the point on innercity london teaching perils quite yet
