Would My Siblings And I Be Eligible For Thai Citizenship?

Featured Replies

I recently heard that due to having a parent who is a Thai national, my siblings and I are eligible for Thai nationality in addition to our American nationality. If this is true, what steps could we take towards acquiring Thai citizenship? I'm currently 19 years old living in the United States with family.

Thanks for the help! :o

Are you male? Do you wish to register for the draft?

Believe first thing is to obtain birth certificate and proof of parent Thai nationality and then contact Royal Thai Consulate for procedures.

I'm not, but my youngest sibling is, he is still in secondary school, & isn't fluent in Thai. I assume that that those who can only speak English will be rejected from getting drafted (even if they 'lose' the draft lottery) due to not being able to speak Thai. That true?

So here's what we should do, am I correct?:

1. Obtain our birth US certificates

2. Get the right proof of parent Thai nationality

3. Contact our local US Thai consulate for the next step to help us get citizenship and a Thai passport

anyone else please reply with helpful tips!

Believe contact with Consulate will provide a list/how to document everything. Others have done it so should be able to fill in details when they read.

Thank you! Would you or anyone who'll be caring enough to answer be willing to offer some advice in regards to my brother? If he applies for the same "luk kreung Thai citizenship"/permanent visa what could his possibilities of actually being military conscripted in the future be? I heard that Thai men have a roughly 1/3 chance everything else being equal. If my younger brother can't really speak Thai, will they most likely reject him from getting conscripted into the Thai draft/military (pending a land invasion from China :o )?

forget about military service for now. It won't be a problem unless you move to Thailand full time before the age of 30.

contact the royal thai emabassy in washingtion DC, you'll need to get a Thai birth certificate issued, and voila, you are Thai. They'll tell you the documents you need.

Then you'll need to get a passport, which will require a physical visit to either the emabssy or the nearest consulate equipped to handle passport applications. Voila, you have a Thai passport.

Then, for any extended travel to Thailand, use the Thai passport, and you'll be able to come and go as you please.

Only when you need to come and live in Thailand - and getting on the house registration and getting the ID card - will you need to worry about military service. As mentioned, if you come before 30, you'll need to go through the lottery process. If after 30, you'll be automatically exempted when you contact the military conscription office.

Trust me, I've been through it all myself.
