Ultrasound To Check What's Up

Featured Replies

This is a medical/health issue but since it's only a woman's prob I'll post it here.

Last year I was diagnosed with fibroids and had an ultrasound that showed a 4 cm growth near my ovary. I need to get another scan done as it was well over 6 months ago and don't know if it's grown as I can now physically feel it. My question is when is the best time to get a scan...just before or just after menstruation. I believe they can become enlarged before a period but can't really recall. I had surgery 7 years ago for endometriosis and have an idea the fibroids grew from the scar tissue so am definitely not keen to have invasive surgery again, but obviously don't want a grapefruit growing in my belly! Any advice from others who've had them?

I have no idea, but you should send a pm to Sheryl. :o .

agreed, she will also probably be able to recommend a place to go too.

I agree about sending Sheryl a PM. She is incredibly helpful and knowledgeable, and gave me some good advice about my recent illness.

In the meantime, I hope you have adopted the habit of drinking good green tea. It is very good for helping to shrink fibroids.

I like your dragon avatar - very cute.

i too have a fibroid as well as a big ole cyst on one of my ovaries. i recommend getting two ultrasounds. one just after your period, at, say, day 6, and follow up with another one at around day 16-20. that will tell you whether its a hormonal thing.

thanks gals :o will do. Will have to wait a couple of weeks to get the scan. Hopefully all is ok.

As Donna says, do it after your period (around day 5-6 is ideal, that's counting from the day your period starts).

If something showed near your ovary it wasn't a fibroid (altho you may have fibroids, too) as fibroids are benign growths in the uterus. It may have been a "functional cyst"or "corpeus luteum", i.e. remnants of an egg after ovulation hence the recommendation to repeat the scan earky in the sysle...if that's what it was, it will be smaller or gone when test is repeated a fedw days into a new menstrual cycle.

Dr. Panon at Samitivej is excellent.

Thanks Sheryl. I'm assuming my period should be finished however for the scan cos that would make it 7-8 days! Yes, they told me I had a cyst too, so am obviously confusing the million things going on in there (endo too). Do you have to make an advance appointment with Dr Panon to get in? Is Samitivej extremely expensive for treatment?

Best to make an appointment but could try walking in, just might have to wait. Can book appoinmtent online at their website.

Samiviej is at the upper end of the price scale but for outpatient vare the difference is not usually that much (inpatient is a WHOLE other dtory!). Consultation will be maybe 1000 Baht. The ultrasound I would guess maybe 5,000 but to be sure call or email the international services dept.

Website is www.samitivej.co.th

Dr. Panon is the best gynie I've found so far in Thailand, very highly qualified and takes plenty of time explaining things. And does NOT in any way push for unnecessary treatments or tests. His sub-specialty is gyn tumors which of course is what you are concerned with and I really trust his judegement and experience.

Wow, big differences in village to city prices! I've had one ultrasound done here about 2 years ago and it cost 700 baht! I would obviously pay for a quality consultation though as I didn't get much information from the doc that did it here. Thanks again for the info.
