Anyone any experience, recommendations, on shipping a car from Europe to Thailand? Thanks ...

The advice I was given, and has constantly been repeated, is don't even consider it.

The importing of cars is excessively taxed and, and I mean 100 to 200%, on the Thai assessment of the value of the car, and the process is a recipe for heartache.

By the way, I am not a Thai car dealer.

Do the same rates apply for car bodies/chassis? Say I want to bring in a dodge charger from some junkyard or whatever in the U.S and put in the engine and all else myself...?

Thanks

While Governor is indeed correct, and the Pres of the Classic Car Assoc of Thailand (himself a very senior Thai personage) said late last year that he sees no end to the obstruction and corruption at the docks on this topic, a farang neighbour has succeeded in bringing in a container load of junk with no probs whatever.

From the admittedly 'orrible looking contents, 3 or 4 Corvette Stingrays will ultimately emerge. It's his retirement project, and understandably he wants to keep a very low profile.

With a 'junker' in parts you may be on the right track, especially as restoration here is so cheap by western standards - and good IF you research places properly.

PM me for more.

Ok, so who would I talk to first? I gotta let some 'people' know what I'm bringing in so I can have everything all "set up" at the checkpoints on the way from the docks to my home yeah? Or do I just get it shipped in first and deal with it at the dock? I've never shipped anything here before, so I don't really know about the politics surrounding this issue.

this means if I wanna buy a gorgeous BMW M5 and I live in thailand it would cost me two or three times it's price in europe?
Well, as an example, a 95 bmw 525 here is worth ( but not in my opinion! ) 399.000 baht, that is approx 6.300 pounds gb,.that car in the uk would struggle to bring 400 pounds,.theres the sort of assesment they would give that old pile if you turned up on the docks with it,. id say look locally for what you intend bringing in, get the market value on it here and theres your tax, on that figure, thailand does not want anything imported ,except for money, its all a one way deal, not just cars,.

And if it is a somewhat classic car whose value is hard to ascertain, they are within their rights (:o) to slap on any old valuation and let you pay up or sit by and watch your motor rust away.

And once they do emerge.. I assume he will just look at them ??

Its getting registrations thats a problem.

Down on phuket they are even clamping right down on previously tolerated beach buggys.. I know of 2 that cant be sold even tho they have registration (in the past) and are being forced off the road.

Cars have been known to grease thier way in through the cambo border still on Euro plates.. Like the 6 months car passport system but without leaving the cash bond.
