PAD threatens to revive street protests

The People's Alliance for Democracy on Monday issued a statement warning about the eruption of chaos if the government acts as a puppet of the Thaksin regime.

"It has been proven clearly that the Samak Sundaravej government is in fact the reflection of the Thaksin Shinawatra administration," the PAD said in the statement.

It claimed that the government was working to benefit one man, the ousted prime minister Thaksin, instead of serving 63 million people.

The government meddled with the media reports, removed DSI chief Sunai Manomaiudom who was in charges of many cases involving Thaksin and promoted Thawee Sodsong, seen as a Thaksin's ally, to replace Sunai just three days ahead of the announcement of Thaksin's planned return, it said.

Justice Minister Sompong Amornwiwat

Justice Minister Explains Transfer of DSI Director

Justice Minister Sompong Amornwiwat insists there is no political motivation behind the transfer of the DSI Chief. He says he is merely doing what is required of him by law in setting up a government anti-corruption unit where the DSI Chief is needed.

During a press conference at Government House this morning, Justice Minister Sompong Amornwiwat denies allegations that the transfer of Department of Special Investigation Director Sunai Manomai-udom is politically motivated.

In a abrupt move late last week, Sunai was transferred to head the new Public Sector Counter Corruption Office. Critics have accused Sompong of trying to punish Sunai for his part in the primary investigations indicating that Thaksin and his family should all be prosecuted for their roles in the SC Assets concealment case.

The Justice Minister, however, denies the allegations, saying he thinks Sunai is fit for the job as secretary general of the newly established Office of Public Sector Anti-Corruption since it requires someone with a clean track record.

Sompong says is required by law to set up the new unit by the 25th of February.

The Public Sector Anti-Corruption Office is required under the new Constitution to offer an internal check and balance system for government agencies.

The Justice Minister says that moving Sunai to head this new agency is not a demotion. He believes that Sunai should be pleased with his new post because the agency will play a very big role in cracking down on corruption. Sompong says that the transfer cannot be politically motivated since all the Shinawatra cases the DSI was investigating have already been forwarded to the prosecutor and the DSI’s work has already been concluded.

He says the new DSI Chief is someone who has the appropriate experience. He also went on to deny rumors that he would also transfer Justice Permanent Secretary Jaran Pakdeethanakul.

Sunai Manomai-udom

DSI Chief

His new position is in the Office for the Prevention and Suppression of Corruption by Government Officials which is a newly established agency to focus on corruption involving junior government officials, only up civil service Level 8.

I, of course, could be in error, but isn't this new graft-busting agency tasked with individuals up to middle rank only? Anyone know for sure?

Regards

PS new as in no officers, no resources, no staff etc..

you are correct, on junior folks, not even middle-management officials.... and certainly not former Prime Ministers

People Power ready for headon collision with PAD

The People Power Party is ready to moblilise its 10 million supporters to counter the antiThaksin protests, MP Pracha Prasopdee said on Monday.

Pracha was reacting to the announcement by the People's Alliance for Democracy threatening to revive street protests to oppose the return of former prime minister Thaksin Shinwatra on grounds of the government's tampering with the legal proceedings to help him eluding the law.

"If the PAD becomes active, I plan to confront it by mobilising 10 million People Power supporters," Pracha said.

Although he doubted whether the PAD could attract the crowds to join its street protests, he would not allow PAD leaders to disrupt the restoration of democratic rule, he said.

"I will face them as they have no right to dictate their will on the country, including the ban against Thaksin from returning to his country like a Thai citizen," he said, issuing a counter threat to drive PAD leaders out of the country in order to ensure peace and normalcy in society.

Was there a wave of excitement while Minkwan was out, followed by a collective sigh of desperation when he came back to live?

Those idiots mobilising villagers to confront Bangkokians will lead this country to chaos and possible military intervention again, and this time it will be bloody. It will probably get bloody even before the army is asked to move in.

People aren't going to miss junta any time soon, but the current bunch provides a stark contrast to the military appointed government, the loser will be the democracy - it's clearly failing this country.

Actually, after now reading Plus' comments, this would have been more appropriate for him.

The more they deny, the more hollow it sounds... with a new twist added for the reason... it's personal...

Justice Minister denies DSI chief's transfer to aid ex-PM Thaksin

BANGKOK - Thai Justice Minister on Monday defended his decision to transfer Sunai Manomaiudom, Director of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI), dismissing criticism that the move was aimed at favouring former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and taking revenge for his younger brother.

Mr. Sunai was abruptly transferred last Friday to serve as acting secretary-general of the newly-established Office for the Protection and Suppression of Corruption in State Sector under the Justice Ministry. The order was effective on February 25.

"The decision has nothing to do with the cases involving the ex-premier as the cases now rest with public prosecutors," Sompong Amornwiwat told a press conference at Government House.

The DSI is handling major cases related to Mr. Thaksin and his family members.

The department recently asked Thailand's public prosecutors to proceed with the cases against Mr. Thaksin and his wife Mrs. Pojaman over alleged concealment of their shareholdings in SC Asset Corp, a listed property company.

The justice minister also denied accusations that the abrupt transfer order was meant to take revenge for his younger brother Pol. Gen. Sombat Amornwiwat, the former DSI chief, who had been axed after by the coup that removed Thaksin from power.

"My mind is not occupied with that issue at all. I don't care what others said," Sompong asserted.

"The main reason behind my decision was that Mr. Sunai as a former judge was suitable and capable for the new agency.

Meanwhile, Mr Sunai refused to comment on the transfer, saying only that he had no worry over the order.

Speculation was rife that Permanent Secretary for Justice Jaran Pakdithanakul is likely to be transferred, but the Justice Minister brushed aside the reports, saying that Mr. Jaran is an efficient person who can serve the ministry efficiently but that must serve the government policy as well.

The subject matter of his speech was just too over-whelming...

Commerce Minister Mingkwan hospitalised after collapse at seminar

BANGKOK – Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Mingkwan Saengsuwan collapsed while speaking at a seminar on the government's policy at a hotel in the heart of Bangkok.

Attending physicians believed a lack of sleep may be the reason that he fainted and wanted to monitor his condition for one night.

Mingkwan, a central architect of the new government's economic policy, was delivering an address on "Marketing Thailand" when he lost consciousness and fell from the podium. He had reportedly said earlier that he was unwell.

Regaining consciousness minutes later, he cancelled his speech and was taken to the nearby Police General Hospital.

A hospital spokesman said later that the former MCOT Plc president was under observation to make sure he has not sustained serious internal damage after having a small injury on his forehead.

Mingkwan's overall condition was seen to be normal, but physicians asked that he remain in hospital for one night and advised that he have more rest after an aide said he had worked into the night for two weeks.

Sleep deprivation was seen as a possible cause of his collapse. Mingkwan was expected to be discharged from hospital on Tuesday, after a cardiac check.

Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej delivered a keynote speech at the forum.

Sompong Amornwiwat

Justice Minister defends transfer of DSI Chief

Justice Minister Sompong Amornwiwat says the transfer of the Director of the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) is appropriate and does not benefit anyone.

The minister says former DSI Chief Sunai Manomai-udom was transferred to be acting secretary-general of the National Counter Corruption Commission (NCCC) as he used to be a judge.

He also says he decided to appoint deputy secretary-general of the Narcotics Control Board Pol. Capt. Thawee Sodsong as DSI director-general as Pol. Capt. Thawee was former officer of the Crime Suppression Division.

In addition, the minister dismisses rumors alleging revenge for his brother and ex-DSI chief Pol. Gen. Sombat Amornwiwat, who was sacked by the Surayud government.

Sompong also affirms Permanent Secretary for Justice Charan Phakdithanakul will not be transferred as rumors say, adding that Mr Charan and he will work together to develop the ministry.

The 59 year-old DSI head was suddenly transferred late Friday to become acting secretary-general of the Office of Prevention and Suppression of Corruption by Government Officials, which has recently been established to tackle corruption involving government officials under Civil Service Level 8 (C 8)."

So who will tackle corruption involving government officials who are at and above Civil Service Level 8?

Samak tells investors his Cabinet is clean

PM Samak gave a guarantee of a clean Cabinet line-up to investors and businessmen yesterday, and vowed to take action against any ministers who try to use their positions for their own gain. Samak said the coalition government led by PPP would strive to prevent corruption, to prove that the critics were wrong to suspect his Cabinet of being greedy. He urged investors and businessmen to keep their eyes on the performance of his Cabinet ministers and inform him without delay if any demanded kickbacks. "Any cabinet ministers who demand money from businesses will be committing suicide. I promise to take care of that," he said in his opening speech to Post Forum 2008. Samak promised to step down if he was found to be in any way corrupt. "If I am found to be corrupt, for even a one-baht gain, I could not stay in this position," said the PM. Samak asked business groups not to be swayed by criticism of his government, especially its economic team. "The cabinet may not look good, but it emerged from a constitutional process. Please wait and see whether or not its work is ugly. Don't jump to conclusions about this cabinet. Just give me time," Samak said. He said the main target of criticism was Deputy PM and Finance Minister Surapong Suebwonglee, as many people doubted his ability to handle economic problems facing the country. Samak conceded that he had failed to convince capable outsiders to join his cabinet and help implement the government's financial policy. Samak said the main problem faced by his government was the fact that former TRT members with experience in economic affairs were among those banned from politics. "All the capable people are gone. The only person available is Lieb," Samak said, referring to Surapong by his nickname.

I fainted plenty of times and have banged my head a few times. If he can't handle that, then he is even weaker than I thought.

Maybe he should start breast feeding from his mummy again. Poor little Mingkawn cat.
