Is it possible to use GPS {or location data} via phones here, Malaysia and in Cambodia? Want to be able to get some coordinates for mapping purposes. Suggestions, options, kit required?

TIA

Any suggestions please about kit available here, for use in SE Asia. Prime requirement is coordinates rather than mapping per se. If phone not viable, what about sand alones, or even lap-top add-ons {USB?}. Can find lots of stuff from US sites, but so far little here.

not sure what you are trying to do. Are you looking for location based services like in the UK/US. (three point remote triangulation) or are you just looking to get a GPS fix localy on the phone while its sitting in your hand?

I have a little hand held eTrex Legend. I have the CX model which means it accepts a memory card. I have a one gig card in mine. If all you want to do is mark coordinates the cheaper eTrex would work fine. It has a function called mark and then it gives you the option to name it whatever you want. I don't know how many waypoints it will store internally but I would guess it will store more than you will ever need. If you want to use it for navigation, I'd suggest you buy one with at least 265MB of memory. The ESRI Thailand map won't fit on a 128 MB card.

The Garmin eTrex is a rugged waterproof little unit and I could use it for all my driving and navigation needs but my Street pilot talks and has a much larger screen. The eTrex is ideal for hiking and biking.

To clarify, I'm being asked to look at some locations, and want to be able to establish their coordinates for subsequent research.

As an example I'm being asked about some parcels of land for possible development. {outside Thailand} I'd like to be able to establish coordinates so as to be able to ascertain detail and provide easily cross-referenced location data. If for example I could get that data on a phone it saves 'yet another bit of kit syndrome', especially since some locations may not be easily accessible, e.g. only by boat at this stage.

Hope this helps.

I would say that an eTrex will do exactly what you want it to do. Google Garmin eTrex and take a look at the capabilities. A program that comes with it is called a Trip and Waypoint manager and it covers the entire earth. Waypoints from the Garmin are easily transfered to your computer and you can then use the program to mark the coordinates and see them on Google Earth. Pretty neat. The Garmin program has major highways but it isn't very detailed and it won't do automatic routing.

I agree with Gary_A . I have an etrex vista. this model will allow you to do area calculations (walk round the perimeter), assess the gradient of a slope etc. Ideally suited to what you want to do. also if you want to go full out have a look at microsoft mappoint (asian maps)

If you want all in one with phone many of the hand phone makers using systems such as Symbian or Windows mobile phones have models with GPS built in. Take a walk around any tech mall in Bangkok and you'll find them.

I myself have a 02 phone with an extra blue tooth GPS attachment, ideal for separating the GPS antenna for best reception in strong sunlight conditions and saving phone batteries. I do like my Garmin Geko (not a phone) when the going gets tough and I have to muck in or it start raining. I myself am not keen on any of the Garmin map products as reconfigurability and price seems excessive to other mainstream generic products.
