I have been using a free download of AVG antivirus for some time. It automatically updates every day. The last couple of days it is telling me that free updates are no longer possible after Feb 25 and software won't work. Is this true? Anyone else using AVG?

Does anyone have recommendations for other antivirus if this one is no longer available.

For anyone thinking of the pay option, I have had problems in the past where the only way to get it to update was to reinstall, so unless I bought it on a CD I would pass on that one.

I don't use it but that usually means you have not updated your AVG to the latest version and they are no longer supporting the version you use.

I've been using AVG Free for years, and I haven't seen any messages indicating that it will no longer be free or supported. if this is true, I'll be very disappointed.

I tried to confirm this by going to the Grisoft web site, but there isn't any mention of discontinuing distribution and support. Are you sure the message you're getting isn't telling you that you must upgrade to the newest version to continue getting the virus definitions and general support?

I also have been using AVG Free for years. I am now getting that message every day while my AVG updates. It states that unless I purchase by the deadline (forget date) I will not be protected. It also tells me that my AVG is an illegal copy. - <deleted> - It was a free download!

Looks like somehow AVG proffesional got installed instead of the free version.

AVG pro works for 30 days after which you have to pay for it.

It's quite easy to end up with the pro version, even when trying to get the free version, they'll put links to the pro version everywhere trying to get you to downlad that instead...

If you look on their website the company has changed name Feb 2008.

They still seem to be offering for free however. Mine is still updating but it is telling me not going to be usable after 25 Feb.

Mine definitely not a trial as been on my computer in the same form for over half a year.

Are we talking about AVG or Avast! here? AVG has always been part of Grisoft. but Avast! used to require a serial number for the free version, which expired after @ 14 months and had to be reapplied for.

Thanks, monty.

I originally downloaded the AGV Free over two years ago so I don't know what changed.

I'll do as you suggest but do you have any ideas on how to avoid the same problem occuring in the future?

Good riddance, less quarrels about which free anti-virus is the best.

Huh???

It's not too often that people are happy about a situation that gives us fewer choices. Personally, I like the concepts of free enterprise, competition, and choices. You would have loved Henry Ford's approach to marketing when he first started making automobiles. He made one style that was only available in black.

:o Maybe I should have stuck to my original Norton which cost a fortune in the UK and gave me so many problems that I tried everything else. In the end I stuck with AVG as I found it was the best - no viruses and didn't slow down my computer.

The fact that it was free was just an added bonus.

AVG wasn't really a choice in my opinion, I never liked it.

I'm Avast user.

I have used many free antivirus programs. AVG is the only one that allowed my computer to get a virus. I used Avast for a long time with no problems but thought it was too much of a resource hog. I now pay for BitDefender Plus V10. I think it costs me about $15 a year and it has a firewall, antispam and anti spyware.
