Has anyone else got a craving for spotted dick? I haven't had any in ages. I used to get plenty back in the UK but have found it hard to come by in Bangkok. Please suggest the best places to find the tastiest spotted dick in Bangkok. Thanks.

Wow, what a coincidence; I just finished eating some. With custard. :D If they're hard to come-by in BKK, they must be impossible to find up here which is why my dear, sainted mum sends them from England along with Marmite, corned beef, Branston pickle etc. Might be your best bet. Either that or make it yourself. :o

Yeah, I'd agree with that, great getting some of the stuff sent over, but how I miss the Cornish clotted cream, which sadly doesn't travel so well. :o

I've seen spotted dick and bread and butter pudding on a menu here.

Racking my brain to remember where.

I remember the bread and butter pudding was great.

Will get back when I remember.

Bread and Butter Pudding - with sultanas and served with custard

Apple Crumble - apple with a crumble topping served with custard

Not complete though.....

Good man, I have to go to Villa this week for shopping, so I suppose a couple of quick beers and some food isn't a bad idea.

You could try making your own. Here's the recipie:

Active time: 40 min Start to finish: 2 1/2 hr

Servings: Makes 6 servings.

Ingredients

1/2 cup mixed currants and golden raisins or other assorted dried fruit

1/2 teaspoon finely grated fresh lemon zest

Suet pastry dough

Custard sauce

Special equipment: 1-quart ceramic pudding mold

PreparationFill a large heavy pot (at least 8 inches across by 6 inches deep, with a tight-fitting lid) with 1 1/2 inches water. Make a platform for pudding by setting metal cookie cutters or egg-poaching rings in bottom of pot. Knead fruit and zest into dough and form dough into a ball. Put into well-buttered pudding mold and flatten top. Top dough with a round of buttered wax paper, buttered side down, and cover top of mold with heavy-duty foil, crimping tightly around edge.

Bring water in pot to a boil and set mold on platform. Steam pudding, covered, over simmering water 1 1/2 to 2 hours (add more boiling water to pot if necessary), or until golden and puffed. Transfer pudding in mold to a rack and let stand 5 minutes. Discard foil and wax paper and run a thin knife around edge of pudding. Invert a plate over mold, then invert pudding onto plate. Serve immediately with custard sauce.

Cooks' note:

• Coarsely chop any large pieces of dried fruit.

It still sounds funny to my American ears, I must say.

It does sound funny.. I was chuckling it up with some of the responses.. Then I had to do a google search for Spotted Dick..

"Spotted Dick Pudding is a traditional British sponge pudding made with golden syrup, suet and raisins. Best served hot with custard."

Sounds delicious.. :o

Clotted cream, clotted cream; wow, what I wouldn't give... And real mature cheddar with some freshly-baked granary bread... :D And a decent pasty!

Wait for it... "If you don't like it here, bugger-off home!" or:

"You have to understand that your Western food is not part of the Thai culture and you must adjust accordingly.

Remember, you are a guest in their country."

Does sound odd, I know. But yep, it's bloody gorgeous, I think. It really sticks your ribs together, mind. You wouldn't go for a run afterwards... :o

It was off the menu for a while - PC Brigade renamed it 'Spotted Richard" Just one of the many references to it -http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/2249273.stm

I bet they say the same things to the Italians in New York, the Chinese in San Francisco and the Thais just about everywhere they go.

Yeah, depressing, isn't it? Come to think of it, apart from a few people and the pub (obviously), food's about the only thing I really miss, you know? I love Thai food but just now and then, I could murder some fish and chips. The daft thing is, I'd only eat F&C back home, I don't know, once a month? But when you know that you can't have something... Aaaarghhh!!!

I am sure you realise this, but, just in case you don't, there are a couple of good fish and chip shops. 'Oh My Cod' near the Khao San Road, and another one just around the corner from Soi Cowboy.

Eurogourmet, western food forum sponsor makes bread and butter puddings, they will ship to most parts of the country for a small consideration and a minimum order. If you ask nicely they may even put some into Villa, who stocks a range of their products.

Have to agree, there are no decent Cornish Pasties available in Bangkok. I've pretty much tried all of the places that sell them, and sadly they are a poor imitation. Aw, I could murder a Philps steak past now!!!

Of course, "I should bugger off back home though" :o

I wouldn't associate the word good with The Offshore, which is pretty piss poor IMO. However, I agree with you that Oh My Cod is pretty reasonable as far as Fish and Chips go in Thailand.
