Khon Kaen -chiang Mai

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I'm planning on driving from Amphur Muang Khon Kaen to Chiang Mai during the school holidays. Can anybody tell me the best route to take? I don't want to stop halfway overnight but do it in one jump so I can spend all the time in Chiang Mai

Many thanks

It's a pretty direct run ..... route 12 via Chum Phae (watch out for speed cops in Chum Phae area !), to Phitsanalok. Turn onto the Uttaradjt road (route 11) just before Phitsanalok ( be careful here, take it slow, it's easy to end up on the wrong road as the signposts are not too clear). Stay on Route 11 via Uttaradjt/Den Chai/Lampang/Lamphun and into Chiang Mai.

If you wan't to save time, and don't mind using non main roads, I suggest you turn rightat Ban Pol onto the 2013 about 40 - 50K short of Phitsanalok. Follow this to Nakhon Thai, and turn left at the traffic lights in the centre of town onto Route 1143. Keep on 1143 until you reach route 1245 at Thong Saen Khan where you do a left. Use 1245 until you join route 11 just south of Uttaradjt and follow the direct route from there. It sounds complicated but isn't really, the roads are all in good condition, the scenery is better and there are far less big trucks on the road.

The first time I drove Udon to CM it took 10 hours, now by going cross country (using route via Nakhon Thai) I've got it down to less than 8 hours including stops.
