Sorry guys. Samak isn't calling the PADs bluff. He's serious when he says he will use force TODAY - if necessary - to clear the protesters.

It's goin' to get nasty sometime tonight.

The iron hand will emerge from the velvet glove tonight.

The PADs intransigence - as well as that of Samak's - is a recipe for disaster.

Don't mean to sound alarmist - but I can't see things turning out any other way right now.

what brings you the opinion that it is not a bluff?

Samak needs to be put away and someone should negotiate with PAD to stop the ptotests.

Unfortunately no one is in control now.

Chamlong needs to be really convinced that Constipation amendment is off the table for a long while - he can't tell his people to pack it up if there's a chance they'll be needed again on Monday.

They should also realise that they can't oust the government altogether, they can only try to influence it, and they have achieved that, or so it seems at the moment.

I think they should try to avoid confrontation by all possible means, at least for couple of days, and then leave on their own terms.

Samak, though, looks dead set on causing mayhem and he is in direct control of the army and police are also not interested in keeping peace.

I think shooting and dead people on the street and the government will fall as well 1 week later.

Unfortunately I feel you are right. he is going to look weak, foolish and lose a lot of face if he now doesnt smash the demo after announcing it live on TV to the whole country, and I cant see him wanting to lose that much face, which is sad. Similalry the PAD cant back down under this threat without looking weak. Lets just hope someone blinks before the collision.

They're getting fed up with hearing the humiliating truth coming out of loudspeakers on the street and tv broadcasts.

This morning's threat will remain just that, a threat.

Tony I sincerely hope you are right, but I have my doubts on this one.

Interesting that it is the supreme commander who keeps getting quoted, where is Gen. Anupong?

Do you know on the generals who is who and who stays with which group?

It is often speculated as to whose side Gen. Anupong would fall if it came to it. The main point though is that the supreme commander is a non-powerful position as he has no troops directly under his control. The head of the army Gen. Anupong has more power and his supposedly close colleague Gen. Prayuth commands the troops in Bangkok and surrounds. Gen. Anupong is keeping a low profile while Samak and the supreme commander talk. It could be because of the recent death of his mother or it could be because of other reasons. However, it is probably not helpful to speculate on such matters.

he is going to look weak, foolish and lose a lot of face

He looks weak and foolish everyday, the trick is to make him believe that he is not. I don't know if anyone can do that before the crackdown, but it's not impossible - the man's a raving lunatic, they just need to pacify him, it has nothing to do with reasons and logic.

Police get ready for order from superiors on rallies

(BangkokPost.com) - Metropolitan police chief Asawin Kwanmuang reportedly told police officers of all stations to get ready and wait for orders from their superiors.

The report came after Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej threatened to crack down on protesters who gathered at Makawan Rangsit bridge on Saturday.

Pol Lt Gen Asawin also told officers to closely monitor the situation.

Meanwhile, a company of police from Chachoengsao province is reportedly moving to Bangkok to back up forces there in case they are asked to help breaking up protesters.

Each of the officers reportedly have shields and clubs, which could possibly be used for crowd control.

It may all just be too late unless we wake up tomorrow to find him saying: "I never said that", but this time it doesnt seem like it.

(BangkokPost.com) - More than 200 riot police arrived at the Ratchadamnoen Avenue on Saturday afternoon and began forming skirmish lines opposite what appears to be 1,000 or more anti-government protesters, amid signs they would try to clear the streets.

Members of the People's Alliance for Democracy made lines behind a barricade about 10 metres away.

Police reinforcements were receiving helmets, shields and truncheons, but had no firearms in sight. Many in the PAD crowd had home-made plywood shields and indicated they would try to resist any police advance.

The police, all armed, came on 10 buses and stationed in front of the Education Ministry at 6.30pm.

Five PAD core leaders announced that they are ready to be arrested but the rallies would continue.

The protesters have blocked main Bangkok streets in the old city, or Rattanakosin area, for a week. Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej on Saturday morning ordered the demonstration cleared by nightfall and a confrontation began to appear inevitable at 5pm Thailand time.

In the meantime all Thai TV channels are broadcasting the usual crap. PBS had a news update for about 20 min with live video feed - situation is really tense there with both sides, grim faced, just meters away from each other.

The police don't look too sure what was going to happen, PAD are resolved not to cede and inch.

Someone has to stop this madness, it's like 1992 all over again, and we have Samak in charge.

What's that ASTV webcast address?

Channel 7 has a live feed from the scene in the bottom left hand corner of the screen - with lots of shots of heavily protected riot police and armoured personel carriers tucked away nearby.

Expect this and other live broadcasts to be replaced with images of the Royal family - and for CNN and BBC to shut down anytime soon.

Looks bad.

Nation posting that the police will assist in a move, possibly to People's Ground at the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's head office, Chatuchak Park or Lumpini Park.

The [Pol Maj Gen Surapol Thuanthong] spokesman said police would not use force against the protesters because police did not regard them as criminals.

However, if the negotiation fails to come up with an agreement and the protest caused damages to other people, it would be up to the prime minister to decide whether to order police to use force, Surapol said.

Comment: I think the Police and Military are not wide Samak supporters, so they are trying to find solutions. I think they should take the offer, as there they are not blocking any traffic and today an evening of tragedy could be avoided. Don't be stubborn PAD take the offer and move to Lumpini!

My wife called police and tried to sound silly. She asked why the police want to kill people.

Answer: "If she don't know, that these people don't like Thaksin!"

She is complete shocked from that answer, never saw her shocked like that. She is speechless (also never saw that).
