Atm Took My Money

Dakhar

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to vent a little. I went to an ATM machine and requested 20K baht. After waiting for about 5 minutes, the machine finally spit my ATM card back at me, without the money or a reciept.

So I thought that was interesting, I waited around, and others were having the same experience. Shortly after that I had my bank book up-dated, and there was a deduction of 20K for that transaction.... that never occured.

You can imagine I am preety peeved, and my wife just blows it off....

She figures the bank will give it back... eventually.

Had that happen a couple of days ago.Immediately went to the bank and had them check balance. 20,000B had been removed and then it had been put back into account with note of error. The bank sent the repair man over to fix it. But a bit nerve racking to stand in front of a machine that has your card and is making a lot of grinding noise. Sounded like it was eating the card. Hit cancel a couple of times and it finally gave the card back. So no real damage done.

Interesting that as I was standing there for a few minutes trying to decide what to do, a young lady came upto the machine and I told her it was broke> She gave me a dirty look and stuck her card in. After a few minutes she was still standing there, I left to talk to the bank. :o

Dirty utensile comparison....

Not to me it isn't.

1) I have never experienced an ATM machine doing this

2) I do not speak/read Thai I am helpless in retaining my money. I have to rely soley on others in order to get it back.

3) Although 20K may seem like a little bit of money for some, I needed this money to pay for my son's medical bills (22K to be exact)

4) The bill is due on Monday, but now the money is gone. So now, I have a choice, pay the credit card intrest for my son's medical bills, or take money out of a CD account and lose the intrest earned either way I lose money due to faulty equipment.

The utensile, I can decide if I want to use it or not, I can leave the restaruant... etc. Here I have zero influence on the matter.

Yes,

What amazed me was how there was litterally a line forming, and people were all getting the same result.... but yet they never left the line. The just stood there, watch failed attempts & then tried on their own!

You should ask for a compensation, as you have to use some "interest" maker instead of some readily available cash...Not much to expect I guess, but worth a try

Good luck

On a related topic, a couple or so weeks ago, the Bangkok Bank (BBL) ATM outside the Royal Garden Plaza on 2nd road (Pattaya) just gobbled up my BBL ATM card, without much further ado. The screen did however offer up a kind of weak apology, something like "account suspended, please contact bank". This was the ATM card from my savings account, with plenty of money in it.

I went straight to BBLs main branch further up at 2nd road, and before going in to complain, I did try my other ATM card (also BBL, but issued on my current account, and cross-linked to the savings account).

There I could access the socalled suspended savings account without problem, and withdrew some money.

When talking with the nice lady at customer service, she said this ATM had been tampered with (Lebanese loop or whatever it is called), and the bank had as a precaution instructed the ATM to eat the cards for a while (don't know if this was only BBL cards or others as well). She told me not to use this ATM for 2 weeks. EDIT: Perhaps better if they had shut the ATM down altogether...?

She was very professional, spoke good English, and offered a new card to be issued free of charge, and ensured me that no fraud could take place. She printed an account statement to show the status right up until I made the report. So the banks do take this seriously, just get there asap with good ID (drivers licence or passport). And passbook, at least when you come to pick up the card. (This did take a week, since now the card had to be issued by the HQ in BKK, so it could be difficult if from out of town).

If you use BBL in Pattaya I would recommend to use the main office on 2nd road for any serious business. More competent staff, better English, and (most of) the ladies look very nice as well. That helps when the queue is long... :o

Otherwise I fully support the advise of threelegcowboy above, especially to use the ATMs "with a bank attached". Cute!

And that reminds me, of course totally unrelated, but please allow me this slight digression: Jan Carlzon, the then Scandinavian Airlines President (early 1980s...?) was asked in an interview to comment about the then (quite inadequate) Oslo airport Fornebu. He said: This is not an airport, it is just a cafeteria with landing rights". He-he, now Oslo has another NEW, but STILL inadequate airport at Gardermoen. Same as Suwanabumi, so therefore my digression is Thailand related (and SAS owned 30% of Thai Airways at the time)...

Re: #2 above: Do you mean the main branch of the bank with the faulty ATM ? Or is it possible, especially outside of Bangkok, that one bank takes responsibility for all of the ATM's in a geographic area ? I would think the latter unlikely but if it is the case, I would like to know where to get a map or list of the zones, and the bank responsible for each.

I had a similar thing happen, and went to the bank and filled in a complaint form. When the clerk checked, the money was already reversed back into my account, so we tore up the complaint. So do go to the bank asap!

Yeap thats what happened to me too

If you use your credit card and pay the bill in full there is no interest.

I had an ATM card get taken by a machine at a large shopping center. Then along came another customer and the machine ate it also. Off I went to get the security guard to stop the madness. So he was amused to see customer after customer get their card eaten. Must have been 10 people he stood by and watched. When I suggested he shut down the machine by putting something over it, he said no.

I visited said bank ASAP and they told me where the MAIN branch was. The main branch had a line of customers getting thier cards back. It seems that not all banks service the ATM outside their own bank! One Main bank will service a number of machines and other banks. As far as a map of these banks, only a BANK ROBBER would have said knowledge. :o

I guess to get this knowledge you would have to loose your card first. :D

A friend of mine tried 3 different ATMs, the first 2 times he tried for 20000 baht. After failing he then tried for 10000baht. No success. These were 3 different ATMs in Lotus, off the super highway. Checking his English bank account 3 days later he noticed 3 withdrawls. Two for 20000 baht and one for 10000. He was a bit pished off. He went to the Thai banks who owned the ATMs and was told that he needed to get a letter from his bank in England to say the money had been withdrawn. He has to phone his bank. (costs money) He has to get them to send three letters (costs 3 times money). If he gets the money back, will he get the same rate as Month ago? Think not! (costs maybe 2000baht) I dont bother asking him about it any more. I can see him deflate when I mention it.

Still, you never know it might all turn out rosy and he gets a bit of compo?

Reminds me of the time we had a friend staying he worked in the water industry and he got two guys to weld a pipe up somehwere at a water plant, they welded on top of a big plastic pipe and the heat melted right thru it, friends comment was that if they asked them to do the same thing the next day they still wouldnt protect the pipe he reckoned many here learnt nothing from previous experience totally switched off!!

Dakhar, I have had the same happen to me on several occasions (as I atm funds from US or Singapore every single day) and have that exact same issue on average 3-4 times a year. In the beginning it was a bit annoying (as I'd go and do the local form complaint AND call my overseas bank customer service... the whole ordeal averaging about $15-$20 in costs) but now I don't even inform the bank as over time, it became obvious that the systems simply reconcile themselves automatically (obviously an exception to this would be if one were to fall victim to a card skimming operation or an internal fraud/crime being committed by folks inside the bank). Have never lost a single baht.

My only advice for folks (the same offered by many on this topic) is to use 'in branch' atm's only. Better maintained, not exposed to the weather (better machine performance and less wear and tear), usually have staff on hand that can fix simple problems with the machine (and if not, the good folks at Diebold will get there faster anyway), and of course it's safer for you as well: funds withdrawn, funds deposited, and then just a minimal amount on your person. Sorted.

Of course I check my balances and reconcile all balances with my own Quickbooks files... I just meant that in my experience no other action is required.

:o

I called the bank today, and informed them that they have still yet to replace the money.

They said that I should be able to call back on the 12th and get the "results."

Like it is a pap smear or something! I want my money back, I don't care for negotiations or to wait for a "result."

Slightly same but different gist on this one.

Sometimes you might have a problem if the name of the person using the card is not the account holder/owner...

ie one of your cards sent to a relative....gf..friend..etc.

A couple of weeks ago wifes niece was withdrawing some dosh from a local 7-11 BB atm using wifes Nationwide card and first 10 k was dispensed OK but when she tried for another the machine hummed and hawed, spluttered, gave back the card but no money .ferted..and shut down..... :D:D .....help.....PANIC.... :D

Fortunately I traced the Branch location on the BB web site, got the details and we called them...VOIP discount ...free.

They admitted that they still had the money buut would need confirmation from Nationwide as to owner of account of the card so I nipped into me good old N/W local branch in Islington and made out a form called

-ATM Claim re Incorrect dispense/deposit....

so far so good ....got it home for wifee to sign and next day whacked it back to N/W....who incid were very helpfull.... :D

A couple of days later it was re credited back into the account......... :D ...happy.............until.....

a week later on same machine it happened...AGAIN....only this time for K 20........WOT... :o

back to Nationwide ......eh.........alright ...one of those things.......ha ha big deal....but same routine and sure enough ...re credited........a week later

That ATM in Theparak 7-11 is now OUT of BOUNDS......... :D

That sounds rather unfortunate, D. Which bank was it curiously? Is this an overseas card withdrawal at a local bank issue or local card/local bank issue?

BTW, it might just be that you have some bad luck regarding customer service because at Vichaiyuth Hospital, I'm told you get pap smear results within a few hours.
