March 10, 200818 yr Sop Press:The true reason for his withdrawl. The Teletubbies suspected he was involved in this Patrol !!! Very, very funny!
March 10, 200818 yr The true reason for his withdrawl. But he's not RC, surely? Why withdraw? It's still against the law for a member of the Royal family to be a RC!

March 15, 200818 yr What's a Rupert A young junior officer who has to be led by the hand by the far more experienced sergeants (who do all the real work) And the best NCOs will remember their early days in uniform as a young private/trooper/gunner when they were led by the hand whilst making every mistake under the sun. The best subalterns know the situation and have enormous respect for the senior NCOs. This is the way it's always been and, hopefully, always will be. As for Prince Harry, I reckon he's a good sort and my respect for him has gone up a few notches. Got his knees brown at last.
March 15, 200818 yr It's too bad some numpties had to blow it for him though. Would have been much better if he'd been able to complete his tour. I doubt he'll get the chance again, at least not in a war zone like this or Iraq. 10 weeks here is a vaction, not a tour of duty. But kudos to him for not asking for, or receiving any special treatment. I'm pretty sure that the last time the British Army was in Afghanistan, any member of the Royals was probably accorded quite special treatment. Harry on the other hand, worked the same as the rest of them, slept, showered and ate in the same conditions as the rest of the troops. In a way he was fortunate to have been here during the cooler "winter" months. This year was a little colder than normal, but quite a bit dryer. The real heat is just around the corner, in more ways than one. The forecasted high temperatures have already hit 30 Celcius, and it's only mid-March. By early July, it will be over 50 in the shade ! As well, the snows in the passes between Pakistan and Afghanistan are melting away, which (usually) enables the bad guys to start sneaking men and equipment through the mountains again (a yearly event know as the "Spring Offensive", sounds quite a bit more dramatic than it really is though). Ahhh well, only a few more weeks before I too get to enjoy some time away from this wonderful place ! (spelling edit !) Edited March 15, 200818 yr by Kerryd

By early July, it will be over 50 in the shade Yup. When I was in Shiraz (Southern Iran) we were up at 2,000m plus - with received-air temperatures over 55 Celsius. One soon learned not to pick up nails or rebar that was sitting outside. But it was a nice dry heat. For me not nearly as enervating as 35 Celsius in a steaming jungle in Indonesia or Nigeria.
