Smoking & Drinking Are Different

In the discussions about smoking, there have been a number of "What about drinking?" posts.

To the ones that I responded, I always maintained that drinking in moderation is OK, but I have yet to see a study that says the same about smoking.

If anyone wants to know more about drinking in moderation, see;

Why didn't you post this in the Health forum?

I did think about that, but in the end opted to reach out to where I believe it would have the most effect.

Intention was for additional balanced perspective to the long and sometimes contentious debate about smoking in this and the regional forums.

There are many drugs that are OK in moderation, but when drugs are not taxed by Governments, they're Illegal.

You can smoke yourself to death and pollute the air for the non smokers around you, you can get pissed outta your head and stumble around like a stupid azzole boring the pants off everyone, and that's OK, cos it's taxed.

Take an Ecstacy, go to a rave have a great time, get pizz tested by the cops and busted for serious drug offences, whilst the older generation get pissed outta their heads and stagger through life quite legally.

All the problems that alcohol causes in town centres in the UK, you think they would legalise Cannabis, the gangs might then be laughing with each other instead of fighting each other.

The new generation probably don't wanna stumble and stagger through life like the older generation, but they are controlled by Laws that dictate what drugs they can take, and it's only the Taxed ones!

So what & who cares? Some people think drinking of any kind is not to be done, for whatever reason. For me, I like to do both in moderation. Fortunately, I never got to the stage where I had to have either one. Drinking to excess makes me sick. Doing either in excess is expensive, short term & long term.

The term "moderation" is at the discretion of the drug user. Should one choose to over indulge, one may reap the "rewards", as such.

It's about time that laws regarding the use of any mind altering chemical, were abolished. Humans have been using & abusing all manner of drugs for centuries. It wasn't until the yanks decided that "communism" was a threat that drugs also became a "problem". Prior to this, drugs were not a problem...because they were legal. For example, in the 1950's, Heroin (medicinal grade) was sold in Australia. It was "illegalised" to maintain a good political relationship with the yanks. Prior to this, there was no apparent problem.

What I decide to do to my body is my business. If, by my actions, I harm somebody as a result of chemical use, I may/should face the consequenses. Laws preventing drug use have never worked. Much the same as laws that prevent murder have never worked.

Humans are so stupid. "War on drugs"...another reason to further repress the already repressed & oppressed population.

I personaly dont smoke hash - just because i dont like the affect - however, if i was walking home late at night i would feel a lot safer passing a group of stoned smokers than a group of drunks!

Someone drinking doesn't foul up the air for everybody else.

If smokers would just inject nicotine straight into their veins then I would not have any issue with them.

Again, as a non smoker - how about this radical porposal: smoking areas/venues and non smoking areas/venues - it is called freedom of choice

What about all the obese westerners killing themselfs and costing the tax payer for health care - due to their gluttony and ignorance - lets ban junk food!

In reality i think people should be more concerned with consuming aspartame and drug residues in their drinking water - not to mention air pollution - as oppossed to worrying about a little second hand smoke.

The sheeple are so gullible regarding what they are told to worry about. Supposedly inteligent people become repeaters of media sound bites - passive smoking my big hairy ar*se

As a mainly expat oriented forum focussing on Thailand, I do not think that many of us are or will be a burden on the Thai public health system, and rightly so. If we choose to poison ourselves and die prematurely, it should be up to us to decide to do so. And let me quote elkangorito:

What I decide to do to my body is my business. If, by my actions, I harm somebody as a result of chemical use, I may/should face the consequenses.

Absolutely! And 2nd hand smoke polluting the air is one such way of harming other people. I do not so much worry about cancer as a result of this, just the filthy air I have to breath while out to eat or otherwise enjoy myself. I can handle it quite well, but my g/f has serious allergy problems, and can not be in a place where smokers are doing their thing.

But some of them still claim it is thier human right...

In Kardemomme by you can basically do whatever you like, as long as you do not harm anyone else. But if you do, politimester Bastian will come after you... So be warned! :o

or the pis_sed up bloke who missed the urinal and pissed all over himself in Silom last night - could smell it wafting from his jeans a nice plume of cigarette smoke would have taken some of the stench away - by the way, Pubs did smell better with people smoking in them, i don't mean smoke directly in your face but a tobacco type aroma to the room - a couple of well known Irish style pubs in the city really stink now of BO and the stench coming from the unshampooed for 50 yrs upholstery - bring back smoke1

Whilst in england a few months ago I was walking past my local British legion Club, one sunday morning, and noticed a couple of distinguised elderly gentlemen standing huddled by the doorway having a smoke. They proudly displayed their vetrans badges whilst quietly suffering the obvious indignity of having to leave their comfortable club to do something which to them had been normal and even promoted during their long lives.

I took the time to stand a chat with them and casualy informed them that it was the very system which they had fought against - Adolf Hitlers, Nazis - who first banned smoking in public places!!

A non facist - non smoker!

No - because they were old but wise. They said they knew the UK was becoming a facist state. Infact they explained that 'right wing socialism' is the best description of facism. They went on to point out that Blair was the most right wing socialist to ever represent a labour government. If they were as bumb as you sound they probably would have told me to f off.
