Phnom Penh, Vientiane, Or Penang For Tourist Visa?

Featured Replies

Greetings all,

Thanks to everyone for the invaluable information I've gleaned over the course of the last couple months while in Thailand. I will be traveling out of the country next week to a Thai Embassy to obtain a 60-day tourist visa. Which of the following would you recommend?

-flying to Phnom Penh (a Thai friend of mine spoke with them, and everything seems alright): BKK- PP= +/- 4500B.

-overland to Vientiane (great article in The Nation yesterday about blood-sucking organisms on the trains from bkk- the north, so I was more considering a bus, quoted at 800B one way).

-flying to Penang (recent changes down there scare me away a bit) BKK-Penang +/- 5200B.

I've done border hops before for more 30-day stamps, but never applied for a Tourist Visa.

p.s. I have an American passport, but no air ticket out of Thailand yet, although I will be returning to the US in June.

Thanks!

Why not fly to Udon and cross to Vientiane? They are known as the most friendly local Consulate at the moment.

Vientianne. Can even get a double entry if you need it.

Forget Phnom Penh, they don't like to give visas.

Forget Penang, They require flyticket to tour homecountry.

So go to Vientiane.

As always, you ThaiVisa members have provided excellent and informative advice! I read the attached links thoroughly, and will be most likely taking the 6am Nok Air flight from ole Don Muang up to Udon, then busing up to Nong Khai and across. I am considering the 17:40 Air Asia out of Udon, back to BKK Su. Airport, but could also take the 18:10 Nok Air back to D.Muang.

Of course, I'll report back on this next week upon return, and the much more popular thread about Vientiane visa activity.

Big thanks. -N

Appears that you're thinking of a one day turn-around on the visa and travel.  Don't work that way, turn in your visa app at the Thai Embassy/Consulate in Vientiane before noon and pick it up the next day.  One night in Vientiane.

:o Yes -go along with the Vientiane advise. Am here right now (Vi) with three Japanese ladies who are cheekily looking for another double entry t.v. The place is crawling with t.v. seekers going by the peeps we have met here in the 36 hours we have been here. But that must be a good sign right?
