The wait is over. Windows Vista Service Pack 1 RTM is now available for download. Both the 32-bit and the 64-bit editions of the service pack are up for grabs. Microsoft confirmed the information leaked by Amazon.com at the end of the past week that Vista SP1 was going to be made available on March 18, 2008. And the Redmond company met the initially announced delivery schedule which pointed to mid-March ever since February 4, 2008 when the service pack was released to manufacturing. At this point in time x86 and x64 Windows Vista SP1 are both up for grabs either as standalone packages or through Windows Update.

“Windows Vista Service Pack 1 (SP1) is an update to Windows Vista that addresses feedback from our customers. In addition to previously released updates, SP1 will contain changes focused on addressing specific reliability, performance, and compatibility issues; supporting new types of hardware; and adding support for several emerging standards,” reads a fragment of the Vista SP1 description.

Windows6.0-KB936330-X86-wave0.exe and the Windows6.0-KB936330-X64-wave0.exe downloads weigh in at 434.5 MB and respectivelly 726.5 MB, being tailored to integrate with both 32-bit and 64-bit Vista operating systems. As Microsoft revealed following RTM, only a select few languages are supported in the March release. The standalone version of Vista SP1 can be integrated exclusively with copies of Vista RTM with these language versions: English (US), French, German, Japanese, or Spanish (Traditional).

Microsoft recommends that Vista users go to Windows Update to get the service pack rather than use its download service.

The version available via Windows Update is only 65 MB in size (compared to 434MB via download) and can diagnose driver problems before installation.

Ok, the online version is smaller than the one for download because the online install only what didn't have already. But if you download the full version an save somewhere you don't need to download all the staff again in case you need to reinstall Vista. Save a lot time because with an new installation you'll need to download all again!

Cheers.

SP1 as expected cranked all the systems systems, not forget, it is not unknown to Microsoft to call something Windows Vista compliant and then after you buy it it means it was not. Similar to 7 computers we have. So with SP1 Vista all (loved Microsoft) security firms are shutdown, and we open again to what every, go security fix MS.

Keep up to good work, sometimes you would almost belief Microsoft work together with the criminals you try to get out of your network, life with Microsoft is hard.....

"Diagnose" is barely what it does - it won't tell you which driver failed. Instead you will get a 0x80073712 error. You will need to go to Control Panel/Problem Reports and Solutions/View Problem History, then click on the one which is most recent, to get any idea of what might have gone wrong.

However, the article is otherwise right, the download size is vastly different. The download, however, will still generate the error report as described above and will save you from having to wait for a slow download from Windows Update, especially if your connection is not good - it's actually much faster to download the 435MB all in one update, according to my experience over the past couple of days.

Yes, a good point. I have often done the same. But with M$ products which are being updated every month in a years time the current SP1 will have lots of upgrades to download for that and it may be simpler to just reinstall original Vista and update online at that time? After all in most users cases reinstalling Vista isn't a common activity.
