bina Posted March 21, 2008 Posted March 21, 2008 because of a very large group of religious orthodox jews who do not vaccinate against anything, there is a big outbreak of measles in the country (a small country with high mobility via public transportation)... including some medical personal in the large hospital near my kibbutz; the amount went from some thing like 60-100 patients last year to 900!! this year.... anyway, we are all being asked to check if vaccinated or not.... i need to know if , in general , kids in korat area that were born in 1971 were vaccinated? soeng soong i know he was vaccinated with some things so highly likely that he was .... but would like to know, or , what its called in thai (local name as well as bangkok thai ) so he could ask his mother who might know... the main reason being that he is ill at the moment: most likely the allergies that we all have at the moment turned into a bad cold/flu (no fever) just very sore throat, snotty nose, sneezing etc.... but, ya never know......... thanx bina

Measles only vaccine (not approved everywhere) in 1963. In my experience with Thai employees, not many that age have had measles vaccination. In your case most likely not. Advise to have "him" (you made no clear reference about whom you are talking about, but I assume a Thai male), vaccinated if the current illness proves not to be measles.
sbk Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 หัด hàt measles ; หัดเยอรมัน hàt yer-rá-man German Measles
bina Posted March 23, 2008 Author Posted March 23, 2008 he was vaccinated with some things so highly likely that he was .... but would like to know, ,so he could ask his mother who might know. what isnt clear??? him is my korat born and bred husband; it says so in the title and in the question... he was born 1971 so need to know if kids from that age group on up were vaccinated, or had the disease (a more likely scenario?)... obvioulsy not vaccinated after birth but more likely when entering first grade.... german measles is rubella? but since no insurance no vaccines.and probably not covered anyway.. and doctors w/o borders are not functioning due to over full capacity because of sudanese refugee kids with chicken pox and the flu, we will have to wait.... he just had a very bad allergy attack, but it does mean i should check out what vaccines they did get... he says he was vaccinated in school as he has scarring (maybe small pox vaccines but not the usual scar for that?) on his arm where he says he got vaccines.... do issan schools have vaccine programs (he studied up to 6 th grade)... anybody care to check out vaccine programs from maybe 1975+ when he would have started school (when a thai child starts first grade?at what age?) i know this isnt as sexy a topic as realmadrid's topics but if someone would feel like digging around in the health records area to find out, i would like to know... all u guys with thai wives, did u ever think about this stuff??? thank you sbk will ask him tonite... thank u rbn ; u are probably correct... although i'm surprised that if workers are sent overseas they arent vaccinated; maybe just tb tests and hiv tests are the required medical vetting... funny how we only think of these things when its almost too late to do anything about it... thanx bina

Bina is in Israel, so that won't help her much but it is good info to know for those of us in Thailand. Bina, my husband is a couple of years older than yours and remembers he had his measles vaccination when he was about 12ish, here on the island. Now remember, back in those days Koh P was extremely isolated with no hospital, no doctor, no cars, no electricity. So, if he got his measles vaccination then its very possible your husband got his up in the wilds of Isaan.

katana Posted March 23, 2008 Posted March 23, 2008 I had measles and mumps as a kid. So presumably now have lifelong immunity. Had a few weeks off school as a result. At the time it seemed like a rite of passage which all children went through without too much fuss. Nowadays there are vaccines for it and it's taken much more seriously. Times change I guess.
