DECENT WINE FOR UNDER 400 BAHT?

I occasionally enjoy drinking white wine instead of beer or liquor. The problem is that it's so dam_n expensive here. My compromise is to drink inexpensive varietal wine. While it hurts to pay about $12-$13 for a bottle of wine that I could buy in the USA for about 1/2 that price, I just can't bring myself to buy a bottle of better stuff for double that price. To be honest, once I open bottle, it will be gone that night. (And my wife doesn't drink). I'm not going to pay the price of a case of beer for 4-5 glasses of wine.

Anybody else share this feeling? More importantly, has anybody found a source, here on the Dark Side, where we can buy inexpensive, but decent, wines?

Hi Lee here from Nois Bar, just to let you guys know of a couple of new places just opened on the darkside.

The first is a new bar not on the map that I created, it's called 'Saints' bar (a tidy looking drinking den) and is across from The Bamboo bar.

For those people that love their pies and fresh pickles etc, there is a new place opened up next to the umim bar. It is owned by an English guy called Lee, who is a chef and specialises in Pies and homemade pickles i.e. Branston/piccalili (sp) as well as other favorite delicacies like home-made fruit pies.

Just another couple of service establishments for us Darksiders!

Enjoy!!!

Just to answer the wine question. The supamitr next to foodland offer a 2/3??? litre box wine (I know what you're thinking) called Franzia, which is a Californian wine (white or red) for under 600 baht. It's extremely quaffable!

Hi Lee,

<deleted> is the umim bar, I have to find the guy with the pies, I have to see if someone in Pattaya can turn out some reasonable pasties. I had high hopes of the bakery opposite Rung's but his Pastry resembles concrete, by the time I'd finished one of his pies I thought I'd have to fork out for some new front teeth, obviously cooked with the microwave (yuuuuck) in mind. Also tried Cornish pasties at both the premiership place on Soi Diana and Butchers arms in Buakhow, <deleted> hanging in both places. You would think that farang owned places serving farang would know better, guess they just can't be assed as they know the next tourist is just round the corner so fuc_k the expats.

At least most of the Dark side places tend to care a bit more about what they serve up.

OK found it, Soi Khao Talo. By the way your map is a permanent fixture on my desktop, great reference. Now I need to get my ass over Khao Talo to find the pieman :o

The best Cornish Pasty I have had is from The Jack Tar bar on Soi6...So much so that I stock their pies, lovely!
