ONE-LEGGED FINN FATALLY STABBED IN PATTAYA CONDO

A Finnish national, with an amputated right leg, suffering from multiple stab wounds, was found early this morning, 25 March, 2008, attempting to crawl naked out of his Jomtien Grand Condotel room, crying for help. He was rushed to hospital, but died soon after. Police discovered signs of fighting in his room, blood covering the floor, a knife and discarded women‘s underwear. Police suspect a bar girl was the assailant.

Receiving a report of murder at 2.00 am, Pol.Lt.Col. Ekadit Srimul, from Dong Tan Police Station, arrived with his assistants and the Sawang Boriboon Rescue Team at Grand Condotel, Jomtien Beach, to find Mr. Erikki Aal Tonen (64), a one-legged Finnish national, naked with over 50 stab wounds to his body, still alive, but barely breathing. He was taken Pattaya Memorial hospital, but Mr. Tonen died soon after from the severity of his wounds.

Blood covered the whole floor of the room, extending out onto the balcony. There was evidence of a considerable struggle with the room's contents strewn everywhere. The TV was still on and a false leg was on the floor. Significant evidence included a one-foot long knife, covered with blood stains, a brown bra and a pair of black knickers on the floor.

Police Superintendent Nopadol questioned Miss Jitra (nicknamed Maew) Sumreelorb (22), a witness who rents the room next door and was told that she had heard the foreign man screaming for help earlier. She came out of her room to investigate and found Mr. Tonen, stabbed and crawling on the balcony floor, pleading for help. Miss Jitra immediately informed Mr. Chaicharn Charnsin (43), a security guard and called 191. She said she had not seen the assailant.

From their questioning of neighbours and security, police ascertained that, normally, Mr. Tonen lived with his Thai wife, but she was currently in Bangkok and had left Mr. Tonen home alone. One witness reported that there had been a pretty, fair-complexioned girl with long hair, around 165 cm in height, who had come to sleep in the room.

There were sounds of a subsequent fight and the young woman later disappeared. Police have informed Mr. Tonen's wife and requested her return to Pattaya for questioning. Police will check the condo's CCTV and search for finger prints and more evidence around the room. Police hope to find the woman suspect as soon as possible.

Finnish Man Murdered at Home.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning police from Dong-tan sub-station were called to a room in the Grand Condotel building in Jomtien following reports of an assault and attempted murder.

By the time police arrived the victim, Mr Errki Aaltonen aged 65 from Finland, had been taken to Pattaya Memorial Hospital, in a critical condition. He had been stabbed with a knife a number of times throughout his body. Medical staff were unable to revive him and he died soon after reaching hospital.

According to his Thai wife of 20 years, her husband had taken up with a bar worker some months ago on an occasional basis. This woman had stolen money, a mobile phone, and digital camera from him. Her husband made a police report but since then had forgiven the woman and taken up with her again on an irregular basis.

Mr Aaltonen ran a successful insurance business with his wife who was out at the time the alleged murderer came to visit. CCTV pictures from the entrance to the condo clearly show the woman arriving on a motorbike with a Thai male, thought to be her boyfriend. Police believe the woman demanded the victim open the safe inside his room and when he refused she attacked him with a knife. Police also siurmise she let her boyfriend into the condo room as well and he assisted in attacking Mr Aaltonen.

Police are aware of the name of the alleged murderer, a 27-year-old originally from Nakhon Sawan, and her accomplice, and are waiting for an official arrest warrant to be issued before they search for the pair and take them into custody. Apparently the pair made off with a mobile and about 3,000 baht in cash.

PATTAYA DRAGNET CLOSES IN ON BRUTAL MURDERERS OF ONE-LEGGED FINN

The dragnet is now homing in rapidly on the killers of Mr. Tonen, the one-legged Finnish victim, brutally murdered yesterday, 25 March. Mr. Tonen was stabbed 50 times in a frenzied knife attack by a Pattaya bar girl in Jomtien Grand Condotel, the upmarket condominium, near Jomtien Beach, Pattaya.

After two hours of following up crucial evidence, including CCTV footage, fingerprinting and further investigation of the condo room, the scene of the murder, Pattaya police are now very near to making an arrest, today, March 26. The CCTV footage revealed pictures of the young female suspect and a previously unreported motorcycle accomplice, who police suspect of working in tandem. The police, however, are working in camera and refuse to name the bar girl, nor were reporters allowed to take any photos at the scene.

Pol.Maj.Gen. Niwat Ratanathamawat, Deputy Commissioner, and Pol.Col.Napadol Wongnom, Pattaya Superintendent are reported as being highly confident that the culprits will be brought to book and, to this end, an arrest warrant will be issued later today.

Mrs. Yaowadee Aal Tonen (48), wife of the deceased, told police that she had been living with Mr. Erikki Aal Tonen for 20 years, as his wife. Mr. Tonen was a manager of a law firm in Finland and Mrs. Yaowadee's profession is a lawyer. She runs the Aal Tonen Law and Business Company from the office in her Grand Condotel residence. On the afternoon of March 23, she had to go to Bangkok to work on a client's lawsuit and left her husband home alone. However, she rushed back to Pattaya as soon as she received news of her husband's murder, but she had no clear idea as to the motive. She only knew Mr. Erikki had had a Thai mia noi (second wife) for over a year. The young woman would, apparently, come to see her husband clandestinely when Mrs. Yaowadee was away. About three months ago, Mr. Tonen had reported his mia noi to the police, accusing her of theft, but later withdrew the charge.

Pol.Maj.Gen. Niwat revealed that the information given by Mrs. Yaowadee was very beneficial to the case. In addition, police acknowledged that the Condo CCTV had shown photos of a Thai motorcyclist, carrying the female suspect on the rear seat, entering the Condo at about 10.00 pm on 24th March. The Thai man then left the Condotel after dropping off the female at the Tonen's condo, but had returned to collect her at 01.30 am, after which the pair had rapidly ridden off through the front gate, in a highly suspicious manner. Although the police know the woman's identity, they do not want to alert her by revealing it.

The motive of the killing was presumed to be robbery because a money case usually worn round Mr. Tonen's neck was missing. However, that sexual relations had taken place was evident from the discarded bra and underwear left in the room and semen stains on the deceased. It is assumed that the female suspect had asked for money after the sex session, but Mr. Tonen refused, provoking a fight. At this juncture, the Thai man, who had originally taken the woman to the condo, returned to pick up her up. It is presumed that both of the suspects collaborated in the frenzied knife attack and also used a wooden chair to attempt to beat him to death.

Police investigators hope to arrest the murderers as soon as possible.

There are many fine woman in Thailand engaged in the "profession" and to consider them all murderers "in waiting" is pretty hard to digest let alone accept.

That said, there are many woman out there working outside the profession who would run a knife through you.

Prostitution has for decades been one of the realms biggest income earners (not only domestically, but exported to every major city in the world) and relatively few of these folk end up as murderers.

So I think that apologies (insofar as jonnie has insinuated) to BG's "in general" are called for.

This appears to be more than a casual encounter with a bargirl. This was a relationship gone bad. Someone has to have had some really bad experiences in Thailnd to believe an encounter with a BG could be expected to end in violent death. Perhaps he thinks all that screaming he hears from the beach is a negative thing but you must remember it could be screams of pleasure.

If that's the case, the fellow was playing with fire and got burnt. Men do stupid things when it comes to getting some play. If he was that stupid, I am not about to worry about my safety. Obviously, he didn't deserve to die, but if you take up with an apparent thieving sex vendor, you had better be prepared for a worse case scenario. I'm sure that the reality for most of the hand wringers is that they really don't care.

Perhaps it is per capita, considering Thailand's female population is around 32 million and the US female population is 153 million, then Thailand isn't that far behind the US after all (if my math is right, someone can check that cause my math is generally pretty bad )
